After Tuesday's combined "Competition Wednesday" and "Turnover Thursday" practice at Renton's Virginia Mason Athletic Center, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll gave a few injury updates as his team readies for its preseason finale set for 7 p.m. PT this Thursday at Seattle's CenturyLink Field.
RB Robert Turbin
Carroll revealed that fourth-year running back Robert Turbin suffered a high-ankle sprain in this past weekend's exhibition against the Chargers in San Diego, an injury that Carroll did not yet have a timetable for a return, noting the club will wait and see how Turbin responds in the next couple of days.
"It's a significant ankle sprain and we have to see what that means," Carroll said. "He feels pretty good about it, but it definitely showed up on the MRI and all that."
Carroll said that was part of the reason why the team is bringing veteran running back Fred Jackson in for a visit. Jackson, released by the Buffalo Bills on Monday ahead of today's League-wide deadline for NFL teams to reduce their rosters to 75 players, spent nine seasons with the Bills, racking up 5,646 yards and 30 touchdowns on the ground to go along with 2,640 yards and seven scores receiving.
"This is a visit for us, with Freddy," Carroll emphasized. "We have tremendous respect for this player. He's got obviously a wealth of background. He's tough, he's smart, he's sharp. We need to see where he is right now at 34 years old and see what he looks like. He's got a big physical coming up today and we'll talk to him later."
Jackson played alongside Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch in Buffalo, where "Beast Mode" got his start in 2007 as a first round draft pick out of California. The two players remain close friends to this day, but Carroll said Jackson's relationship with No. 24 didn't play a role in bringing him in for a visit, noting the Seahawks had an "obvious attraction" after they saw Jackson was released by the Bills.
"He's been a very adept pass catcher and a good pass protector," Carroll said of what Jackson might bring. "He's always been a good runner. He's got great feel and good sense - he had a big run in the game last week, he had a 40-yard run last week and scored a touchdown. But he's been a very adept pass receiver and I think that's something maybe he could fit in if we get down that way with him."
WR Chris Matthews
Wide receiver Chris Matthews suffered a strain to the AC joint in his shoulder in the team's preseason opener against the Denver Broncos. He's missed the past two preseason games, but returned to practice on Tuesday and should be ready to go against the Raiders on Thursday.
"It was his first time back, but he's ready to go," Carroll said. "They just iced him down at the end of practice today, but he had a good day."
LB Mike Morgan
Linebacker Mike Morgan pulled his hamstring in this past Saturday's game against the Chargers. Carroll said Morgan will likely sit out this Thursday night.
"Mike pulled his hamstring and he feels really good today - it shouldn't be that good in a couple days," Carroll said. "But he does have a pulled hamstring that we're going to take care of for certain this week and we'll see where he is next week."
QB Tarvaris Jackson
Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, who suffered a high-ankle sprain in the preseason's first week, is still eying the regular-season opener for a return after missing the past two preseason games.
"He's throwing the ball now and he's getting out," Carroll said. "They're not letting him run yet. We're hoping that when we start them up, all the way to like next Wednesday, that by that time he'll have as much rest as he can get and we'll see where he is by then."
Due to the shortened week, the team doubled up on a Tuesday practice of preseason week four with the themes of "Competition Wednesday" and "Turnover Thursday".
