KANSAS CITY -- Led by rookie quarterback Trevone Boykin, the Seahawks mounted a fourth quarter comeback to stake a 17-16 victory in their preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium.
With the game clock completely wound down, Boykin found fellow rookie wide receiver Tanner McEvoy for a 37-yard touchdown to pull Seattle within one point of Kansas City. And of course, because it's preseason, Seattle elected to go for two, with Boykin handing the ball off to running back Troymaine Pope, who found the end zone and gave the Seahawks a win.
Boykin, who took over after an early exit from starter Russell Wilson, led all four of Seattle's scoring drives, finishing 16-of-26 for 188 yards and the last-second touchdown. Midway through the third quarter, Boykin gave way to former Skyline High School star Jake Heaps, who went 3-of-10 for 33 yards in less than a quarter of work. Boykin, though, returned to close out the game for Seattle.
Wilson and the starting offense saw limited work, with the Seahawks quarterback going just one series and completing 3-of-6 passes for 34 yards and one end-zone interception. Wilson's one drive saw Doug Baldwin make two grabs for 23 yards and Tyler Lockett make an impressive sideline grab on another ball for 11 yards before Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters came up with a pick on a ball intended for Jermaine Kearse.
With Thomas Rawls, C.J. Prosise, and Zac Brooks on the mend, Christine Michael led all Seahawks rushers with seven carries for 44 yards, good for a 6.3-yard average. Michael had four carries for 27 yards on the Seahawks opening drive, including a long run of 16. Converted wide receiver/cornerback George Farmer finished second on the team among running backs with seven totes for 15 yards.
The Seahawks' other nine points came off the foot of Steven Hauschka, who connected on field goals from 52, 49, and 50 yards out.
Defensively, most of Seattle's starters played two series, including Kansas City's opening touchdown drive, before giving way to backups. The defensive highlight of the day came from rookie defensive back Tyvis Powell, who snagged a fourth quarter interception, and also made a few standout plays on special teams.
The Seahawks fly back to the Seattle area Saturday night and have Sunday off. But the team returns to work on Monday for a "Competition Wednesday" practice ahead of the club's second preseason game, a matchup against the Minnesota Vikings set for 7 p.m. PT on Thursday, August 18 at Seattle's CenturyLink Field.
