Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll on Running Back Thomas Rawls: "I Have No Hesitation Telling You He's Going To Play In The Opener"

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll shares injury updates prior to the team's third preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Running back Thomas Rawls, who started training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list while rehabbing from the ankle injury that ended his rookie season early, will not play against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night at CenturyLink Field. But after Wednesday's practice at Renton's Virginia Mason Athletic Center, head coach Pete Carroll was confident in saying Seattle will have Rawls ready for the regular season opener on Sept. 11 against the Miami Dolphins.

"Thomas looks really good," Carroll said. "All I can tell you is he looks great. I have no hesitation telling you he's going to play in the opener. I have no hesitation saying that. We'll see what happens next week."

Tight end Jimmy Graham, meanwhile, who started camp on PUP with Rawls as he continues to recover from a torn patellar tendon, started working in team drills Wednesday, when the Seahawks held a lighter practice ahead of their third preseason game.

"He was involved today in this tempo, which is a good tempo to start the transition," Carroll said. "He will be picking up steam here in the next couple weeks."

As offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said could be the case, the Seahawks will get their first game-look at rookie running back C.J. Prosise this week.

"He will play," Carroll said of Prosise, the team's third-round pick out of Notre Dame who's been sidelined since the first day of training camp because of a hamstring setback. "We're ready to go with him. It will be limited, but we'll get him in there and look forward to just getting him started, getting some snaps. He'll play throughout, kind of just sprinkled in plays to see what he can do. This is the first step. It's a big deal."

Carroll called Thursday's game reps against the Cowboys "really important" for Prosise's return.

"He's looked really good in practice and everything we've seen of him looks good," Carroll said. "We just haven't seen him very much. He just needs to get going and get started and get back to hitting and getting tackled, taking care of the football, and all that kind of stuff."

On top of his duties at running back and catching balls out of the backfield, Prosise was an effective special teams player for the Fighting Irish. Carroll said Prosise wouldn't see any action there against Dallas, but "expect him to play and contribute there" when "he's in the mode of playing on a regular basis."

"He's a very smooth, gifted athlete, and he's fast, too," Carroll said. "You can see that. He's got really good hands. He's got a style that you can see that I think you guys will recognize pretty early if he gets a little bit of room, a little space. He looks like he can help us. He's done a very good job of learning his stuff as far as we could tell up to this point. He's got a lot of stuff in protections and pickups and things like that we're anxious to see him demonstrate, but he's looked very good in practice with that stuff."

He's a few more personnel updates from the Seahawks head coach before tomorrow's game against the Cowboys:

  • Offensive lineman J'Marcus Webb, who's missed the first two preseason games with a knee injury, will see snaps at right - and potentially left - tackle against Dallas. "He's ready to go. He had a couple really good days. Very determined, didn't like the fact that he lost some of his opportunity there by being out. He's come back very determined and looked very good in practice. I expect him to play well in this game just based on how he practiced. He'll play on the right side, depending on how the game goes he may get a couple snaps on the other side, too."
  • Carroll said strong safety Kam Chancellor, who's "itching" to hit somebody after missing Seattle's first two exhibitions with a groin injury, will play against the Cowboys. Defensive tackle Jordan Hill will also make his preseason debut. "He's going," Carroll said. "Glad to have him back."
  • Offensive lineman Germain Ifedi, who was rested Tuesday with an oblique injury, will play Thursday, Carroll said.
  • Running back Zac Brooks, who was sidelined with a hamstring injury to start camp, is "raring to go," Carroll said. "He's fully back and he'll be out there. He'll be playing."
  • The hamstring injury wide receiver Kasen Williams was recovering from "just hasn't gotten better yet. It hasn't improved all the way," according to Carroll. Williams will not play against the Cowboys.
  • Tight end Nick Vannett (ankle) and defensive tackle Jarran Reed (toe) won't play against the Cowboys. "Neither one of those guys will make it for this game," Carroll said. "They're both making good progress, but they're totally different injuries."

The Seahawks hold practice for a final run through before their third preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night.
