The Seahawks placed receiver Tyler Lockett on injured reserve Tuesday, the result of a leg injury sustained in Saturday's game against Arizona. Receiver Kasen Williams was promoted from the practice squad to fill the open roster spot.
Williams, who went undrafted out of the University of Washington in 2015, has spent most of past two seasons on Seattle's practice squad, though he earned a late-season promotion last year. The former Skyline High School standout appeared in the final two games of the 2105 regular season, catching one pass for 8 yards. He also played in both of Seattle's postseason games.
Lockett, a third-round pick in last year's draft, broke his tibia and fibula while making a 28-yard catch in Saturday's loss to Arizona. Lockett had surgery on Saturday night, and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is optimistic about the receiver and return specialist's chances at making a full recovery before next season starts.
"The surgery went exceptionally well, and he has a real chance to get back going four to six weeks from now, and from there he'll work his way back in a few months and have a chance to get himself going," Carroll said Monday. "He's absolutely positively optimistic about all of that.
"All indications if everything goes as it's supposed to he should be in pretty good shape and have a chance to come back, really without question. There's always an opportunity for complications and stuff, but the extraordinary worker that he is, his attitude, his mentality will all lead to the indication that he should be able to come roaring back from this."
Lockett, who earned first-team All-Pro and Pro-Bowl honors as a returner last year, finishes the 2016 season with 41 catches for 597 yards and one touchdown, as well as 114 rushing yards, including a 75-yard touchdown that was Seattle's longest run of the season. Lockett also had 606 kick return yards, averaging 26.3 yards per return, and 243 punt return yards.
