Seahawks Select Mississippi State Tackle Justin Senior With No. 210 Overall Pick In 2017 NFL Draft

The Seahawks added their second offensive lineman in this year's draft, selecting Mississippi State tackle Justin Senior.

After using six of their first eight picks on defensive players, the Seahawks went back to offense with pick No. 210, selecting Mississippi State tackle Justin Senior with their second of two sixth-round picks.

Senior, who is from Montreal, Quebec, was a three-year starter for the Bulldogs, primarily at right tackle where he started 38 games, including all 13 games last season. Senior noted that the Seahawks have a big following throughout Canada, and that his mom is a fan, making Seattle an ideal landing spot.

"When (the Seahawks called), I was so excited, I didn't really know what to do," Senior said on a conference call with Seattle-area reporters. "… I was a Seattle fan, especially with Beast Mode and all that, especially coming out of Canada the Seattle Seahawks were a really big team. A lot of my friends love the Seattle Seahawks. My mom likes the Seattle Seahawks. When it happened, I was like 'Wow, I couldn't picture it any better than this."

Senior was the recipient of the Kent Hull Trophy as a senior, the award given to the state of Mississippi's top offensive lineman. In part because of Senior's play, the Bulldogs gave up the second-fewest sacks in the SEC last year. He said the Seahawks and offensive line coach Tom Cable had shown interest in the pre-draft process.

"I got to meet the O-line coach at the Combine," Senior said. "We had a really good one-on-one conversation.  We really didn't talk about football, we just talked about me as a person, and what I believe in and the things I like to do. I felt like he was a really great person to learn from.  Before that, I hadn't really had that much contact with them. I talked to them on the phone once or twice. That was about it."

And it's safe to say Senior has the type of mentality that Cable and the Seahawks like in a lineman.

"Seattle is a running team, and I love running the ball," he said. "I think it is the best part about football, and they are a run-first, throw-the-ball-second type of team. I'm just trying to bring that mentality back to Seattle, just pound and pound and pound all the way up the field. I love that."
