The Seahawks made a change to their 53-man roster on Tuesday, waiving defensive end David Bass and signing defensive tackle Garrison Smith from the practice squad in his place. Seattle also made a couple of practice squad moves, releasing linebacker Austin Calitro and signing linebacker Joseph Jones and free safety Tyvis Powell.
Smith saw action in three games for the Seahawks last season, recording five total tackles. He originally entered the NFL in 2014 as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia, signing with the Miami Dolphins and spending time on the team's practice squad to start the season. During his rookie year, Smith bounced from Miami's practice squad to New Orleans' to San Francisco's, a team he stayed with until he was waived at the start of the 2016 season, which is when Seattle came calling. The Seahawks placed Smith on injured reserve last October, ending his first season in Seattle early.
Bass, a 2013 seventh-round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders who spent time with the Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans before signing with the Seahawks as a free agent this past May, recorded one tackle in two regular-season games with Seattle this year. Bass' standout play during preseason — he recorded 10 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a pass defensed in four games — earned him a spot on the Seahawks' 53-man roster to start the team's 2017 campaign.
Powell, in his second NFL season out of Ohio State, returns to the team he played eight games for last year. The Seahawks originally signed Powell following the 2016 draft before waiving him prior to the conclusion of his rookie year. He was picked up by the Cleveland Browns and spent time with the team until this past June, when he was released and claimed by the Colts. Indianapolis placed Powell on injured reserve on September 4 and he was waived from injured reserve one week ago.
Jones, meanwhile, joins the Seahawks' practice squad after a short stint on the Los Angeles Chargers' practice squad and a training camp stay with the Dallas Cowboys. An undrafted rookie out of Northwestern, Jones appeared in all 13 games his senior season, starting five and finishing the year with 46 tackles.
Calitro, an undrafted rookie out of Villanova, was signed to Seattle's practice squad on Labor Day. He signed with the New York Jets after the 2017 draft and spent time with the San Francisco 49ers during training camp.
