Malik McDowell said he was “smiling from ear to ear” as he got a call from John Schneider and Pete Carroll on Friday night, when the Seattle general manager and head coach told the Michigan State defensive tackle that the Seahawks were going to select him with the No. 35 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
On the field, McDowell's addition should give the Seahawks defense a versatile athlete capable of playing multiple positions up front, where he'll join an already disruptive group featuring players like Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, Frank Clark, Dion Jordan, Cassius Marsh, Jarran Reed, and Ahtyba Rubin.
Off the field, Seattle fans will get a dog-loving Detroit native who prefers the aisle seat on an airplane and believes Denzel Washington is the actor best suited to play him in a movie.
