Bobby Wagner used his early-December 98-yard interception return for a touchdown as a platform to help spread a bit of holiday cheer this past week, when the Seahawks linebacker hosted a secret Santa shopping spree for Seattle-area youth.
A total of 98 kids from local boys and girls clubs each received a $100 Target gift card from Wagner to spend on anything they wanted in the store, where Wagner was joined by team mascot Blitz and several of Wagner's Seahawks teammates, including including K.J. Wright, Austin Calitro, Shaquem Griffin, Shaquill Griffin, Jacob Martin, and Emmanuel Ellerbee.
"Giving back has always been important to me and each year I try and find a way to spread love during the holidays," Wagner captioned in an Instagram post from the event. "This year I decided to take 98 kids on a shopping spree with hopes of spreading love and holiday cheer. It was a great day for everyone!"
Wagner's efforts are just one example of how Seahawks players have been helping communities in need this holiday season. Seahawks Legend Cliff Avril joined current Seahawks Jacob Martin and Poona Ford for a holiday shopper surprise last week, while others like George Fant and Quinton Jefferson hosted a gift-giving event for Renton youth and their families at team headquarters. Meanwhile, the Griffin brothers joined Kam Chancellor for a holiday hospital visit across the state; Dion Jordan put on a Special Olympics holiday party in Seattle; and Tyler Lockett provided pizza and preached the power of reading to students in West Seattle. As a team, the Seahawks also announced last week their support for homeless families, signing on to help raise funds for the Mount Baker Family Housing & Resource Center.
As Wagner notes, Seahawks players recognize they're in prime position to give back, and there's perhaps no better time to lend a helping hand than during the holiday season.
"I just think that you recognize how fortunate you are to be in a position to kind of get the things that you want, and you know there's families out there that don't necessarily have that, so I want to be able to give that back to them," Wagner said. "I watched the people that kind of came before me and I think that it's real important to give back to the community because you're teaching the people that are young that it's good to give back to the community, so that's kind of my idea, and I wanted people to have a good holiday."
