As the Seahawks head back to Detroit for the third season in a row, Seahawks safety Coby Bryant will have the opportunity to return to a stadium where he played his rookie year, coming up with a forced fumble and where he also played last season before getting injured.
"Frustrating," Bryant said on the injury. "And then getting back and still learning what my role was definitely frustrating, but at the end of the day, I just had to be there for my teammates and be the best teammate I could be."
Now, after showing that he deserved an opportunity for more playing time, Bryant gets to show that he can "be the best teammate" he can be after being named a Week 4 captain.
"It's special," Bryant said on being named captain. "That's actually one of my goals that I printed out for myself. It's close to home, and family is going to be there. That's definitely a great moment."
After a good rookie showing finishing his season with four forced fumbles, two sacks and 70 tackles and a solid start to a second season before injuries sidelined him for nine games, Bryant saw increased playing time last week vs. the Dolphins. Bryant only played one snap through the first two games and head coach Mike Macdonald said that Bryant earned the playing time.
"Well, doing the right things over and over again," Macdonald said. "I tell the guys, it's like when you played baseball. I was a good fielder. Sometimes I couldn't hit, and so I wasn't in the lineup. It's like 'You want to play, Mike? You better hit the ball.' So go out there and make plays and do it consistently. Then they can't leave you out of the lineup. So that's just how it works. You stack enough of those in a row, then obviously it becomes undeniable and then we got to make room."
Bryant said the opportunity to go out and make plays for the team was "definitely exciting."
"Just going out there and contributing in any way possible…I just want to help the team," Bryant said.
Macdonald said, "I couldn't wait for Coby (Bryant) to go out there in dime and see what he did. That was cool."
Macdonald said that he likes being able to give players the opportunity to go out and play.
"I like doing that. I like rewarding guys that are doing a great job. I haven't thought of it as a challenge. I think if you shoot the guys straight on where they're at and why their role is the way it is, they appreciate that. It's fun to give guys more opportunities. We want to create enough depth where if we are stressed at a certain position, you can't wait for the next guy. Like 'I can't wait to see you play.' That's the feeling we want to generate around here. It's not like 'Oh, shoot. So and so's got to play.'
