Before the ink had time to dry on his three-year contract extension, Seahawks safety Julian Love was at practice making plays, like coming up with a pick on a third-and-four play, that showed exactly why he earned his extension.

After signing with the Seahawks, in his first season with the team, Love went on to have his first Pro Bowl season, with four interceptions, 10 passes defensed, and most recently earning himself a spot in the NFL's Top 100 Players of 2024, coming in at No. 95.

"It's exciting," Love said on the extension. "Obviously, it's security for me and my family and just the belief the program has in me."

Head coach Mike Macdonald said that there was a lot to like about Love's game, the type of player he is and his presence in the locker room.

"Just really excited for him. I think it's a shout out to him and the type of person that he is, the type of football player. Definitely the type of guy that we want here and just excited for him. He's worked his tail off and hopefully he's found a home here in Seattle for a long time." Macdonald said.

In a safety room that no longer has Quandre Diggs or Jamal Adams, and new faces in K'von Wallace and Rayshawn Jenkins, Love has also stepped up as a leader and voice in the locker room that Macdonald can lean on.

"I think it's open communication. I think Julian's the guy that'll shoot you straight and hit you between the eyes on stuff and you respect that and he has a great perspective on what he's been through, what he expects. The temperature from the locker room, he can translate some of the messaging, but I'd say that in addition to being a great football player, so we're excited that it's working out and it'll be here."

And to make sure that Macdonald's message translates to the team, Love said he focuses on being himself when relaying the message.

"I try to be cool, calm and collected and I just try to have perspective. And so I think to be that kind of middleman with what his emphasis is, what his message is and try to relay that to the team in any way I can, is my job. Being a leader on this team is just being myself. I think I'm an intimate guy. I'm not a hoot and a holler guy. But I talk to my guys, I want to know how everybody's feeling. I have to know how to communicate to our guys because everyone's different. And so that's my job. I got to relay the message down and just build this thing as we go."

Love has said before that he has an underdog mentality and felt like he might not always get the recognition, but now after being recognized for his hard work he said, "You feel good when the guy you're playing for trusts you and believes in you… I'm excited to play for him and to obviously now earn what I have going forward."

But for the underdog that signed a contract extension, under a new head coach, in his second season with the team, he had to bet on himself to get to this point.

"I'm a big proponent of when in doubt just double down on myself. I think no matter what situation I've been placed in, I've been productive. I've stayed who I am, which is tough when things sometimes don't fall your way. But I think that's the most validating thing is that I stayed true to myself in this process as a player, as a person at home for my family, and to be rewarded is extremely validating. So, I'm grateful."

The Seahawks held their second practice of training camp on July 25, 2024 at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center.
