NFL Franchise Tag Window Opens
Today marks the beginning of a two-week window where NFL teams can apply the franchise tag to one of their players. Clubs can use the franchise tag once each year on a player that's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.
The tag secures the player for a one-year, guaranteed contract at a set value. That contract value is determined one of two ways - the average of the top five salaries at the player's position once the restricted free agent signing period has ended, or 120 percent of the player's salary from the year prior, whichever value is greater. Once a player receives the franchise tag, they cannot negotiate with other teams.
Here's a list of Seahawks that will be unrestricted free agents. Notable players include cornerback Byron Maxwell, offensive lineman James Carpenter, safety Jeron Johnson, linebacker Malcolm Smith, and defensive tackle Kevin Williams.
That said, you'd have to go back five seasons to find the last time Seattle used the franchise designation. The Seahawks tagged kicker Olindo Mare in 2010 - the first season with coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider at the helm.
