NFC West Update: Cardinals Head Coach Bruce Arians, Quarterback Carson Palmer Retire From NFL

A recap of the latest news around the rest of the NFC West following the final week of the 2017 regular season.

For the final time this season, take a look at what's new with the Seattle Seahawks' competition around the rest of the NFC West:

Arizona Cardinals

What Happened: Arizona wrapped up the regular season with a road win over the Seahawks, topping Seattle 26-24 in Bruce Arians' final game as head coach.

  • Postgame in CenturyLink Field's visiting locker room, Arians delivered an emotional announcement to his players that he had coached his final NFL game. Arians, 65, retires having led the Cardinals to a 49-30-1 record and 1-2 playoff mark through five seasons.
  • One day after his head coach called it a career, Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer did the same. Palmer, who played under Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll during their time together at USC, announced his retirement from the NFL in an open letter to fans after 15 NFL seasons.

What's Next:A search for a new head coach. Team president Michael Bidwill and General Manager Steve Keim have started to look for Arians' replacement.

Los Angeles Rams

What Happened:The Rams, who clinched the NFC West prior to Week 17, rested their starters in the regular-season finale and dropped a 34-13 result to the 49ers.

  • Seven stats to know from the Rams' historic 2017 campaign, topped by the team's offensive turnaround in quarterback Jared Goff's impressive sophomore season. Los Angeles averaged 29.9 points per game to lead the League in scoring after ranking dead-last in that same category one year ago.
  • Rams running back Todd Gurley put together an MVP-caliber season
  • Inside linebacker Mark Barron, who's missed much of the last three games including all but three defensive snaps against the Seahawks in Week 15, is on track to play when the Rams open postseason play this weekend.

What's Next:Los Angeles looks ahead to the Wild-Card Round, where the No. 3-seeded Rams will host the No. 6-seeded Atlanta Falcons at L.A. Coliseum. Kickoff is set for 5:15 p.m. PT this Saturday with national television coverage on NBC.

San Francisco 49ers

What Happened: The 49ers faced a Rams team resting its starters in anticipation of the playoffs and San Francisco took care of business, defeating Los Angeles 34-13.

What's Next:A coin flip. The 49ers finished the 2017 regular season with the same record (6-10) and strength of schedule (.512) as their Bay Area counterparts, the Raiders, so a coin flip between San Francisco and Oakland will determine which club picks No. 9 and No. 10 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
