Rapid Reactions: Seahawks Defense Dominates In 6-3 Win Over Bears

The Seahawks rode a dominant defensive performance to beat the Bears on Thursday Night Football

There are no ugly wins in the NFL, especially not for a team that traveled two times zones on Christmas for a Thursday night game, so the Seahawks will gladly take the 6-3 victory over the Bears that they earned Thursday, and fly home happy knowing they improved to 9-7 to keep their NFC West chances alive.

Here are five rapid reactions to Thursday night's win:

  1. The Seahawks defense, and pass rush in particular, made life miserable for rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

The Bears came into Week 17 having allowed 60 sacks, the second most in the NFL, and on Thursday, the Seahawks were more than happy to add onto that total.

Thanks to a mix of pressures dialed up by Mike Macdonald as well as players just winning their matchups in four-man rushes, the Seahawks were able to sack Williams seven times, with six different players getting in on the action. Leonard Williams added two sacks, giving him nine this season, while Derick Hall got one to stay one behind Williams for the team lead. Jarran Reed had a sack for the second straight game and three players, Rayshawn Jenkins, Uchenna Nwosu and Devon Witherspoon, each recorded their first sacks of the season.

For the game-clinching play, the Seahawks didn't end it with a sack, but once again, the pass rush was a big factor, forcing Williams to heave up a desperation throw on fourth down that was intercepted by Riq Woolen. The takeaway ended a streak of nine straight games without a pick for the rookie QB.

  1. Devon Witherspoon was making plays all over the field.

Ask any coach or player and they will tell you that Devon Witherspoon is playing great football this season, but through no fault of his own, the flashy plays just haven't been there this year like they were during his rookie season.

Playing in front of a prime-time audience, Seattle's second-year corner was able to remind folks just how disruptive of a player he can be, making several big plays to help lead a very strong performance by the defense.

Witherspoon recorded his first sack of the season, albeit in unusual fashion, chasing Williams out of bounds for no gain, which is credited as a zero-yard sack, and he had three tackles for loss, doubling his total for the season.

  1. Leonard Williams continues to play at a Pro-Bowl level.

The Seahawks traded for Leonard Williams last season, then re-signed him in March, because interior game-wreckers are a rarity in the NFL, and Williams has very much been that type of player in his first full year in Seattle.

On Thursday, Williams added two more sacks, giving him nine this season, as well as three tackles for loss and five quarterback hits. Williams's 9.0 sacks are the second most of his 10-year career, and his 15 tackles for loss are a career-high. His 27 quarterback hits are the second most of his career, only behind the 30 he had in 2020.

  1. Zach Charbonnet and Kenny McIntosh impressed early, filling in for Kenneth Walker III, but yards were harder to come by in the second half.

The Seahawks opened the game with a run-heavy offense, with Zach Charbonnet and Kenny McIntosh combining for 53-yards on seven carries on an opening drive that ended with a field goal.

Those two continued to run well throughout the game, though the Bears improved on run defense in the second half to limit the damage. Even with a quieter second half, however, Charbonnet finished with 57 yards on 15 carries while McIntosh added 46 yards on seven carries. The Seahawks finished with 122 rushing yards after gaining just 59 on the ground last week.

  1. The Seahawks struggled to finish drives when they did move the ball.

Despite failing to find the end zone, the Seahawks did some things well on offense and had some promising drives, starting with an opening drive that went 71 yards before ending with a 27-yard field goal. The Seahawks had three more drives reach Bears territory after the opening drive, but got a total of three points out of them, punting once and turning the ball over on a Pharaoh Brown fumble that could have otherwise produced points.

Must-see shots of the Seahawks at their Week 17 matchup against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Thursday, December 26, 2024.
