Seahawks Cornerback Jeremy Lane Sits Down During National Anthem

Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane remained seated during the playing of the national anthem on Thursday against the Raiders.

OAKLAND -- Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane remained seated during the playing of the national anthem at Thursday's preseason finale against the Raiders, a move that came less than a week after San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick remained seated during the national anthem to protest what he feels is racial injustice in America

Following Seattle's 23-21 win over Oakland, Lane said, "I wasn't trying to say anything. Just standing behind Kaepernick."

Lane, who said he did not tell anyone on the Seahawks of his intention to sit during the national anthem, said he plans to continue to sit until he feels like "justice has been served."

"Right now, I don't think it accomplished anything for me, or the cause," he said. "That's the plan."

Lane joins Kaepernick and 49ers safety Eric Reid as NFL players to sit during the national anthem this preseason. Lane said he is prepared for the criticism that may come from his actions.

"Yeah, I am prepared for it," said Lane. "I don't mean any disrespect to anybody. But I'm just standing behind what I believe in."

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, meanwhile, called Lane's decision not to stand during the national anthem "totally an individual decision."

"This is a very interesting issue that we're dealing with right now," Carroll said. "Our team has been working at it and we've been in the process of communicating about a lot of stuff right now. That was an individual thing, but I'm really proud of the progress we're making in the conversation and I look forward to continuing it with our guys.

"It's really important to us to understand and to be smart about what we're doing, how we handle our business, and we have, like I've been telling you, a great group of guys that lead this team, and they're going to help us as we move forward. I'm very much in support of them and how we handle it. This was an individual statement tonight."

Carroll said he checked in with Lane after the game to talk about his decision.

"He was very composed and poised about it," Carroll said. "I don't know what he said, I know what he meant to say and what he was trying to get across. The individuals in this program have always been very crucial to us and recognizing them and this is another time. We support our guys."

Added Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, who said he knew Lane was going to sit: "Any time you stand up against the flag, it's going to be perceived something. Obviously, Jeremy doesn't stand against those who sacrifice for this country, or anything like that. He obviously understands the guys who have made the greatest sacrifice for our country and freedom, but he also understands the oppression that our country has put African Americans and minorities through for years, so yeah I think that is something that they are trying to get recognized, and looking for people to make a change to. Even with all of this, you are getting African American Veterans reaching out and saying that they have been discriminated against even in the service, so I think this discussion that Colin started is going to evolve into something deeper.

"It is cool that we can have an open dialogue, an intelligent back and forth dialogue," he added. "That is what makes America the greatest nation. You can have a back and forth dialogue. Other places it is unassured in the same way, and you can't have the same conversations."
