The Seahawks signed receiver John Rhys Plumlee off their practice squad on Thursday, giving the rookie out of UCF a shot at making his NFL debut on Sunday.

Tight end Brady Russell was placed on injured reserve due to a foot injury that has kept him out of the past three games.

Plumlee, a quarterback in college, signed to Seattle's practice squad in November, and has been working as a receiver in practice. He initially signed with the Steelers following the draft, and also spent time on Jacksonville's practice squad before joining the Seahawks.

In three seasons at Ole Miss followed by two at UCF, Plumlee passed for 5,838 yards and 34 touchdowns while also rushing for 2,557 yards and 28 touchdowns, including 4,857 passing yards, 1,367 rushing yards and 35 total touchdowns in his two seasons at UCF. After joining the Steelers, he was used as a receiver and kick returner in training camp.

The Seahawks practiced inside at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
