Featuring postgame quotes from the following:
Head Coach Pete Carroll
Our preseason effort here tonight. The guys played really hard. Played tough. Hung in there. As you all know, it's really hard when you come out minus one in turnover ratio. We were down five tonight in a one-point ballgame, but these guys didn't stop fighting, clawing and scratching, staying in the game. I was really proud of them. It was a good effort by the fellows in general. Start on the defensive side of the ball. Dublanko, he had double-digit tackles again and some good hits. Did a really nice job. Myles played really good football again for us. Josh got a nice sack tonight. It couldn't be more obvious, but Michael Jackson played some really good football. He played a great game tonight. He made a bunch of plays. Physical, tough and all that. He really just topped off a tremendous preseason for himself.
On the other side, what we did well tonight is we ran the ball a little bit. We protected really well. It's probably the best protection that we had across the board. Quarterbacks had a chance and could see what they needed to see. The ball was everywhere for Dallas tonight. Geno was solid tonight in his outing and Geno's going to start. Geno's going to start the opener. He's earned it. He's won the job. Drew just ran out of time in making his bid for it. I'm clear about it. I just wanted to let you know so that everybody knows so that you don't have to ask about it anymore. In the meantime, Drew's got to keep on battling because he's got all kinds of stuff in him, and I want him to be ready at a moment's call. He's going to keep growing and pushing and developing. He's a fantastic player and I have no problem playing with him, too. We're fortunate to have two guys that can go, and if he comes off the bench, when he gets his chance, he'll be ready to go. We see a different group than what we've been seeing in here preseason because of all the guys we count on so much. Rashaad Penny. I've seen Kenny Walker get back out and go. He'll have a chance to make it for the opener. Lockett and DK, our tight ends and that group, I'm really excited about them. Particularly because the offensive line has really done well this preseason. We're going to count on those guys to keep getting better and coming through. We had some guys who got banged up tonight. We will see a number of guys get back out there.
So we're here. Two weeks to go. These days will be preciously dealt with. We're preparing for Monday night. It's a great opener. It's a great chance to play for the league on Monday night. We'll see starting this week. The reps go to all the guys who will do the playing.
On what Geno did to win the starting job.
He's just keeps earning it. Because we really put him up against the competition. Drew took a shot at him all the way throughout. Those guys got along beautifully. They really couldn't have done that better. He'll give us the best chance to play great football right off the bat.
On how much taking care of the ball is ultimately the bottom line.
It's a huge statement, taking care of the football. We've been one of the best teams in the last number of years in the NFL in taking care of the football. It's really hard to take it away from us. The decision-making goes along with that. Treasuring that football also.
What was your view of Drew's night with the three interceptions?
They were all different ones. There was a ricochet. Then he had one, I didn't talk to him about the specifics of it. I want to hold off talking about it, but it's really hard to win when the ball is flying in their hands. We've got to do a better job. And we've got to help, too, when the ball gets deflected. I didn't see that one either, so I didn't get a great look at it. We'll see about a half hour from now.
On the play of the running game.
I thought we were pretty solid again. We have our ways to go about it and I think the commitment is there. The personality of the guys up front is there. The athleticism is there and our runners were ready to go. I thought Homer had a great preseason. DeeJay had a great preseason. Those guys – the best they've ever been with us.
On how Abe Lucas has handled starting.
In general, I'm really pleased with him. He did a fantastic job for a first half guy. But both guys, coming out of the same system, different parts of the country, have made the transition to be run guys. They come off the rock, they're both physical, athletic. Finishing well, that's the stuff I'm looking for.
On if Sydney Jones will be back soon.
Sydney's just clearing the concussion stuff. Let's keep our fingers crossed that he can. He feels ok 99% of the time. He's still got a little something there so we're just being really careful with it. But two weeks from now, he should be ready to go.
On Drew Lock's playmaking ability.
I don't have any question that he can play. He's got all the athleticism. He's got arm strength. He's got talent. He's got creativity, all of that. I think he's going to be a fantastic football player soon.
Quarterback Geno Smith
On finding out he will be the starting QB:
"It wasn't a major reaction. Obviously, I'm thankful for the opportunity and grateful, but I have a lot of work ahead of me. That was my mindset from the start – just getting ready to go out there and win games. This is just step one in that process. It's really about winning. None of this will matter if we don't out and win the games we're supposed to win."
On what it means to win the job:
"It means a lot. I'm pretty sure it's something I've been preparing for. The reality is that it's just step one. It's just the beginning. I've got to make sure that I'm ready to go out there, win and play 17 games and more. So, for me, I'm grateful. I'm thankful. I'm forever indebted to the Seattle Seahawks organization. But it's time to get to work."
On what he showed them to earn the job:
"I think in the games that I played last year; the numbers speak for themselves. But the thing I showed the most, and I try to continue to do this, is to make the right reads, have the right footwork, make the right run checks and make sure there are no negatives on my grade sheet. That's what I play for. I pride myself on making sure guys are in the right position and being that coordinator on the field. Then when the plays come, make the plays. I believe in my ability. I know I can make a ton of plays out there with my arm and my legs. It's about moving the chains and scoring points. We have to do that first and foremost."
On taking care of the football:
"That's the number one way to lose games in the NFL is not protecting the football. Earlier in my career, I had some issues with that. I learned very quickly that the quarterback's main job is to protect the football as well as scoring points, being dynamic and all those things. I really think when I came here, that I turned the corner in terms of protection of the football. Coach preaches it every single day. It's the motto of the team. The organization is all about the ball. When I'm out there, I'm always focused on doing the right things, making the right reads, obviously staying aggressive but being smart."
On the pass protection:
I'm extremely impressed with the pass protection. Starting with Austin Blythe, he's done a great job of making all the "mike" points. We got back and forth through that. I'm always the guy who tries to have the last say so, but with him, he takes a lot off my plate. All the guards of played great. The tackles have played great. Every single one of those guys have stepped up to the plate. I think competition is what has really allowed us to get better in those aspects. I'm extremely impressed, especially with the young guys stepping right in and being ready from day one and with the veteran guys with their leadership."
On how personally satisfying winning the job is:
"You know, if it never happened, I would have been satisfied with my career. I've always done my best. Sometimes, God doesn't put things in the cards for you. I was always prepared. I was always ready and always gave everything I had to my teammates. I believe that because I continued to strive and continued to get better, the opportunity has arose. Satisfaction is not really the word for me here. I'm grateful but at the same time, I'm preparing to go out there and win games."
DT, Myles Adams
On his game:
"I think the game was good. My whole key in the preseason has been to be more consistent. I feel like I was more consistent today too. There were plays out there. The defense stepped up. The team stepped up. We saw a lot of stuff that we practiced for."
On his camp:
"This camp has been really special. It's my third one, my second one with Seattle. I know I picked up on a lot from last year being a full year on the practice squad. I was able to come in here and make my mark, show what I can do and show my improvement and become more consistent."
On what he has improved:
"I feel like I've improved my interior line play and my explosion. Overall knowledge of the game, the game slowed down for me this year. That's been the biggest key this preseason. The game has slowed down for me and I was able to move faster."
Quarterback Drew Lock
On hearing Geno Smith will be the starting QB:
"As a competitor, you're always disappointed and I was disappointed. You want to be out there. You want to be playing with those guys. You want to be able to step on the field and show you can do it. Yeah, you're disappointed but now it's my job to have his back and be the best teammate I can be. I need to come out everyday and find ways to make this team better and make myself better. I have to strive to get better every single day. I know I won't be taking the reps, but there's a lot of ways you can get better. I learned a lot about what to do last year in this situation and how to be ready for any chance that I get. I just need to get better any day."
On catching Covid and missing time:
"The easy answer is anytime you miss a game it sets you back whether its preseason or regular season. The Raiders, obviously, I was very disappointed that I didn't get to play in that game. But I came out in practice this week a lot better, and I had an opportunity."
On today's game:
"I think, there's three throws that I want back. I think there's a lot of good plays on tape too. I've got to learn from those bad ones and take care of the football."
On what he's learned this month:
"You've just got to be a man about it. I was raised right. My parents did a good job. I can come up here and address this like a man. Like I said, I'll do what I can to make this team better every day, and myself, and Geno. This is a team sport. There's going to be 11 guys out there…but there's a lot that goes on during the week to win a football game."
On his covid experience:
"It was interesting. I know the first time I had it, it was just a headache. I didn't have the symptoms. This time, it kicked my butt a little bit. It was interesting. But I felt like having this week and how it played out, I was able to take baby steps back into it. But I'll never make the excuse that it was a condition of how I played."
On if this is the end:
"No. Regardless of the message from anyone, me personally can't treat it as an end. That's just a dark big hole you can get yourself into. That's the exact opposite of what I'm going to do. That's the last thing I'm going to do for myself. That's the last thing I'm going to do for this team."
Defensive Tackle Myles Adams
Wide Receiver Penny Hart
On what he takes away from a preseason game like this: "I think to just finish. We just have to finish. I think I could have made that catch, the second one. If I could have made the second touchdown, we would have ended up winning the game. I'm really nitpicky about my game and what I can bring to the team. I definitely think I could have made that catch and we could have won that game at the end of the day. It's building blocks. Stack them on top of the others."
On the importance of winning preseason games: "It's really important. It builds the chemistry of the team. It gets you ready for the season, so it's definitely pretty important. But luckily it doesn't count toward the record and everything we want to do going into the season."
On his personal goals for the preseason and his achievements against his goals: "Just being reliable, consistent every single year. Slowing the game down more and more every single year. The same goals, being at peace with life. Just being myself."
Tackle Abraham Lucas
On what he takes away from a game like this, which was back and forth and a close finish: "It's nice to win. That is obviously the most important thing. Winning is everything. But, there's still good and bad that you take away from every game, whether it's a blowout win or a blowout loss. There's good things and bad things. Focus on the good things, keep you going and fix the bad stuff."
On his goals for the preseason: "Without getting too personal, my goals were just to compete every day and to just get 1 percent better every day. I know that sounds super cliché. It's a sport and we are playing a game, but it is a job at the same time. You take it very, very serious, almost to the point of mental fatigue sometimes. So I just try to keep it all in perspective and keep it moving from there."
Linebacker Lakiem Williams
On what he takes away from the game: "It was just a great opportunity to get out there with my teammates and play in front of the fans. You know, just get out there and play football and ball."
On the importance of winning in the preseason: "I would say it's very important because it's the preseason and everybody wants to win. Its always a good thing to come out there and try to get a W. The preseason is usually the younger players out there, whatever happens kind of happens."
On the touchdown catch he defensed in the 3*rd* quarter: "You just gotta kind of get out there and just try to do everything you can. I don't think he caught that. I'm just going to say that. … You just gotta get out there and play with your technique and let it play out. I felt like the technique was there, it was just a helluva catch."
On whether the team is missing anything by not having a fourth preseason game: "I don't think so. I think we'll be ready to go. You know how the coaches are in the preseason. They want to see how people are looking. Going into the regular season, we have a strong plan and we will be ready."
Cornerback Justin Coleman
On what he has told the younger guys about starting their careers on special teams: "That's where it starts. I told a couple of guys, just give it your all every play. Whatever happens, whatever the outcome is, it'll turn out for the best depending on how much effort you gave. They really got nothing to worry about, I feel like, as long as you know you gave it your all and you can be satisfied with the results."
On whether people should worry about the team being winless in the preseason: "Be patient. We have a lot of talent. A lot of guys who can ball. I feel like we can make a huge jump towards this season. Learn from the preseason. Get our guys out there and make plays."
