The Seahawks signed second-round pick Nick Emmanwori Friday, ahead of next week's start of training camp.

"I'm super excited for the season," Emmanwori said after signing. "I don't want to put too many expectations on myself, but I can feel there is definitely something good brewing, and just the team energy feels good going into camp."

Emmanwori, an All-American safety at South Carolina, had a first-round grade on Seattle's draft board and the Seahawks looked into trading back into the end of the first round to add him after selecting guard Grey Zabel earlier in the round. Those trade talks didn't culminate in a deal getting done, but the Seahawks were able to swing a trade early in Round 2 to select him with the 35th overall pick.

"We had (Emmanwori) right next to Grey," Seahawks general manager and president of football operations John Schneider said after the second day of the draft. "Your question (after the first round), 'Other people you're interested in?' Yeah. Great relationship with Chad Brinker, Tennessee (Titans president of football operations). We were talking to a couple clubs there. Yeah, it worked out great. We were a little nervous that things were going to fall apart there. Not sure how far he would have gone. Felt like a way. 50, 52 felt like a far distance. He wouldn't have fallen there. This is one of the best Combines I've ever seen.

"We felt like we added two first-round draft picks. When you're doing that, we're giving up a third-round pick, then you have to figure out what the third round is going to look like once everything is picked apart there. It was just evident to Mike (Macdonald) and myself, everybody in the room, that it was well worth it."

Said Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald, "He's been a guy that our whole staff has been really excited about the whole process. How do you watch his tape and not just see the potential of what he can become? To our coaches' credit, they really felt strongly about it. Go through the process, get aligned with the scouts, the scouts felt the same way. It's our job to kind of make it come to life now, which is the fun process. Get in here, go to rookie football school, learn what a slot formation is, 21 personnel. Build it from the ground up. If you do it the right way, I believe it can be something special."

Upon arriving in Seattle for offseason workouts, Emmanwori continued to impress coaches as they threw a ton of information at him to prepare him for what should be a versatile role in Macdonald's defense.

"Nick keeps showing up," Macdonald joked of the rookie making unannounced visits to his office. "I have to tell him, 'Hey, man, the door is closed. Knock.' No, Nick has been up there a bunch."

Because of Emmanwori's rare combination of size and athleticism, the Seahawks plan to deploy him in a number of roles, and he's taking to that challenge well, with the help of both the coaching staff and veteran defensive backs.

"First thing is the vets in the room are really leading him, and they're doing a great job of setting the expectation, bringing him along," Macdonald said. "He's understanding he's a rookie, but, 'Hey, let's go. You're with us, but there's a certain standard that you're going to have to abide by.' Nick has the humility to do that and to operate that way. But to his credit, we're giving him a lot. The bullets aren't live yet. That's the next step for him is to show it he can handle it in those type of situations. He's going to be able to do that He's really poised. He has a great -- he just understands ball, and again, he really likes the process of doing football all the time, and Jeff (Howard) is doing a great job with him coaching him all the time. Really pleased."
