Common Threads: Top Players To Suit Up For Both The Seahawks & Lions

With so many players playing for multiple franchises throughout their careers, here are some standouts to sport the Seahawks and Lions jerseys.

Common-Threads-Week4

The Seahawks head to Ford Field to play the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football, the first matchup between the two teams since September 2023, a game that the Seahawks won 37-31 in overtime.

A total of 90 players have suited up for both franchises; here are some of the top players to sport both uniforms across their careers.

DE Cliff Avril

Avril, drafted by Detroit in 2008, is the poster child for Seahawks-Lions Common Threads, having played his 10-year NFL career evenly split by five seasons with each team. While playing for the Lions, he recorded 39.5 sacks, 37 tackles for loss, and 58 quarterback hits. Avril was also a menace when it came to knocking the ball loose, forcing fumbles 16 times over his first five seasons, including a career-high six times during the 2011 season.

In March 2013, Avril signed with the Seahawks and hit the field in stride, matching career highs for forced fumbles (6) and quarterback hits (14) in a season. After the team finished the regular season 13-3, Avril continued to disrupt in the postseason. One of the most notable plays of his career came just 12 seconds into Super Bowl XLVIII, when the opening play from scrimmage was snapped over quarter back Peyton Manning's head. Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno recovered the loose ball in the end zone, but Avril was there to tag him while his knee was down. The safety became the fastest scoring play in Super Bowl history.

In addition to finishing his career a Super Bowl champion, Avril was selected to the 2016 Pro Bowl, a season in which he tallied a career-high 11.5 sacks. His name is also in the Seahawks franchise record book: 1st in postseason sacks (6.5), tied for 2nd in postseason forced fumbles (2), tied for 4th in career forced fumbles (13), and 10th in career yards lost on sacks (225.5).

S Quandre Diggs

Detroit selected Diggs in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft and he made his first career start in Week 7 during his rookie season. Having been a single-game captain a couple times prior, Diggs' teammates voted him a season-long captain for the 2019 season.

"I step in this locker room every day, and I just want to earn the respect of my teammates and just let them know that I'm going to be out here, I'm going to be ready to go," said Diggs of his new role. Little did he know the growing respect for him as a leader and player included the staff in Seattle. Through his four and a half seasons in Detroit, Diggs had grabbed six interceptions and forced three fumbles.

In October 2019 after he had played five games with Detroit, the Seahawks traded for the safety and he made his first start against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football. The ball hawk wasted no time, intercepting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in the 3rd quarter and contributing to Seattle's overtime win.

Diggs would go on to be a three-time Pro Bowl selection in consecutive years and led or held a share of the team lead in interceptions from 2019-21. In total, he grabbed 18 interceptions in Seattle and his 315 interception return yards stand as the 10th most in franchise history. He was also named team captain in 2022 and 2023, and echoed what he had said earlier in his career.

"It means everything, honestly, because all I really care about was the respect inside of this building from my teammates, my coaches... It's even cooler to be a captain with one of my best friends, Tyler Lockett. So, it's something that we couldn't even imagine when we were training for the Combine."

After the 2023 season, Diggs was released and later signed with the Tennessee Titans, reuniting with fellow former Seahawks safety Jamal Adams.

QB Jon Kitna

Kitna, a kid from Tacoma who played college ball at Central Washington, signed with his hometown team in 1996 as an undrafted free agent. Spending time on the practice squad and playing internationally for the Barcelona Dragons, he didn't make his NFL debut until the 1997 season. Starting in place of an injured Warren Moon, Kitna rallied the team to a 22-21 comeback win over the Oakland Raiders after being down 21-3 at halftime.

Kitna became Seattle's full-season starter from 1999-2000, throwing 41 touchdowns and more than 6,000 yards. Though he only played in 39 games for the Seahawks, he still has the seventh-most passing attempts (1,128), completions (658), and yards (7,552) in franchise history, marks that were recently surpassed by current starting quarterback Geno Smith.

Departing Seattle in free agency, Kitna played five seasons in Cincinnati and then signed with the Detroit Lions, where he would become the starter. From 2006-07, his first two seasons there, Kitna threw for more than 4,000 yards each season and his 372 completions in 2006 led the entire NFL. The next season, though, he would suffer a back injury during Week 4 and miss the remainder of the season.

In February 2009, Detroit traded Kitna to Dallas, where he played the final two seasons of his NFL career. After the conclusion of his playing days, he returned home to Tacoma and began a coaching career at his high school alma mater, Lincoln High School. Kitna's coaching journey has since taken him to Texas, Arizona, and Ohio.

WR Golden Tate

Selected by Seattle in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft, Tate appeared in 11 games as a rookie, pulling in 21 receptions for 227 yards. By 2012, he was a full-season starter and his stats reflected his growing contribution to the team's success.

Back to receive punts, Tate was also a special teams standout. His 68 punt returns for 787 yards are both top-ten marks in franchise history. Elsewhere in the record book, Tate caught an 80-yard touchdown pass during a 2013 game against the St. Louis Rams, which is tied for the sixth-longest pass completion in Seahawks history. From 2011-13, Tate "hauled in 144 of 149 catchable passes since 2011, leaving him with the best drop rate in the NFL over that span, according to Pro Football Focus."

One of Tate's most memorable plays happened in 2012 on Monday Night Football against Green Bay, when he caught a game-winning Hail Mary in the end zone as time expired. The play was called a touchdown on the field by the replacement referees and upheld after a booth review. That was be the final game with replacement officials; regular officiating crews returned the following week.

After winning Super Bowl XLVIII with Seattle, a game in which Tate caught three passes for 17 yards, he signed with Detroit in free agency. Interestingly, Tate's receptions and yards improved every year through his first five seasons, culminating in a career-high 99 catches for 1,331 yards and a Pro-Bowl selection in his first season with Detroit. He topped the 1,000 receiving yards mark twice more for the Lions from 2016-17.
