ORLANDO—Seahawks fans may not have loved Jim Harbaugh when he was the coach of the 49ers last decade, but they'll like what the new head coach of the Chargers has to say about Seattle's new head coach, Mike Macdonald.
Macdonald and the rest of the NFC head coaches will meet with the media Tuesday at the NFL Annual Meeting, but the AFC coaches were up on Monday, and one of Macdonald's former bosses had plenty of good things to say about Seattle's 36-year-old coach.
Last month at the NFL Scouting Combine, it was Ravens coach John Harbaugh raving about Macdonald, who spent nine seasons working his way up the coaching ranks with Baltimore. And on Monday, it was Jim Harbaugh's turn to praise the Seahawks' new coach.
While Macdonald spent most of the last decade in Baltimore, he did leave in 2021 to become the defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan working under Jim Harbaugh. The younger Harbaugh returned to the NFL as the head coach of the Chargers this offseason, and on Monday he was asked by reporters about Macdonald, and Harbaugh didn't point to the defensive acumen that helped the Ravens field the NFL's top defense last season, but rather Macdonald's humility.
"One thing I'll say about Mike is that he's himself," Harbaugh told reporters Monday morning. "And that's every day. He's a great coach but there's humility, too, there. Some coaches make the mistake — you have a great year as a coach and someone gives you Coach of the Year — and that's great, you're Coach of the Year. That doesn't make you Coach of the Decade.
"Mike understands that and understands that every year is a new year and you have to attack it the same way every year. Don't get a big head. That's a trap. That's a deep, dark lonely trap. Same for coaches and same for players. Couldn't say enough good things about Mike."
Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald continues to build out his coaching staff for 2024 so check out who will be will leading the team next season. (02/28/24)
