INDIANAPOLIS—The NFL Scouting Combine is a key part of the draft evaluation process, giving teams a chance to meet with top prospects, watch them work out, and put them through medical evaluations.

But another important part of this week in Indianapolis are the meetings that take place between teams and agents and they lay the groundwork for contract extensions or free-agent deals that get done later in the offseason.

For the Seahawks, there are decisions to be made on players headed towards free agency, as well as top players headed into the final year of their contracts.

While Seahawks general manager and president of football operations John Schneider isn't going to get into the specifics of any contract negotiations, he did talk a bit about some of the key players the team has to make decisions on this offseason.

Quarterback Geno Smith is headed into the final year of the deal he signed after the 2022 season, putting him in position for a potential extension.

"We're going to meet with (his agent) this week, and see where it goes," Schneider said.

Asked if there was a deadline to get a deal done, Schneider said there is not, noting Smith still has a year left on his deal, adding, "But we expect him to be our guy, but we want to do what's right, too.''

Schneider later added that he is close with Smith's agent, Chafie Fields, saying, "We've had great conversations with him."

Whether or not the Seahawks get an extension done with Smith, the Seahawks will also look to address that position in the draft, something Schneider has wanted to do more frequently in the past, but has been unable to just based on the way the draft board falls.

"Well, hopefully the board talks to us, and maybe we draft a quarterback," he said. "It just hasn't gone that way."

Schneider was also asked where things stand with receiver DK Metcalf, who is also heading into the final year of his contract, saying, "He's on our team. He's a big, strong, fast, physical receiver."

Another receiver heading into the last year of his contract is Tyler Lockett, and as Lockett himself acknowledged heading into and following the final game of the 2024 season, his future is uncertain due to his large salary cap number in 2025.

"We'll be talking to Andrew Kessler, his agent, we'll be meeting with him this week," Schneider said of Lockett. "He's just one of my all-time favorite players."

Asked if he sees Lockett being back with the Seahawks next season, Schneider said, "I don't know. I don't know. We'll see how the conversation goes, but I'm not sure."

On the free agency front, one of Seattle's top priorities will be bringing back linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who played a big role in the team's turnaround on defense after being acquired in a midseason trade.

"We've had positive talks with this group ever since we traded for him, and we'll continue that this week," Schneider said.
