With DK Metcalf out for the second week in a row, the Seahawks elevated practice squad receiver Cody White for Sunday's matchup against the Rams. White spent most of last season on the Seahawks practice squad, finally making his debut for Seattle on Sunday, and made sure it was a memorable one.
"When they told me I was up, I was just hoping that I had done enough to prepare for an opportunity, and I feel like I did a good job," White said following the game.
While he only had two catches on the day, there were a couple of plays that were difference makers in the momentum of the game. White was able to get his hands on a punt in the fourth quarter, although the Seahawks were not able to score on the drive that ended with an interception.
"Well, that was actually my first time repping it," White said on the blocked punt. "I hadn't repped it in practice at all. They just told me what to do on the sideline, and I went in there and figured it out and was able to get a block. I practiced that every day in practice, so I felt like I was pretty prepared for the moment."
White added the scheme is what gave him confidence to be able to go out and make that play.
"Jay (Harbaugh) set up a great scheme," he said. "(Jake) Bobo had a great pick, and then anytime I get an opening to go block a punt, I'm going to take it, and I've been working on the technique. I trusted myself, so when it opens, I know I'm going to go make the play."
Head coach Mike Macdonald said that White brings the same energy to practice each day.
"Glad that he had an opportunity show what he had to do," Macdonald said. "Guys were fired up for him. It shows the depth we have on our football team. Like I said, we have the right guys. Just having an opportunity. This guy plays extremely hard. Love Cody. Happy for him."
Also, during the fourth quarter, he was able to draw a penalty for pass interference and haul in a 28-yard pass on the Seahawks' game tying drive in the fourth quarter.
White said that ever since he stepped foot in the Seahawks' facility, he's been waiting for the chance to be able to get his first catch as a Seahawk.
"I talked to my receiver coach before the game, he said that I was going to get some opportunities. I didn't know if it was going to be a lot or a little, so I just went in knowing the whole game plan, knowing where to be and whenever [Geno Smith] gave me an opportunity, just go make a play on the football."
Smith said that what the team saw from White today is what they've seen since he's been with the team last season.
"We expected that from Cody," Smith said. "He's been doing that since he's gotten here. And he's a hard worker man. He's one of the hardest workers on the team and he deserves it, man. He deserves to go out there and make those plays. I think he's always prepared. He knows what to do. He knows all the positions in the receiver room and he just does such a great job throughout the week that I was so happy for him to get the opportunity. I could see it in his eyes in pregame. He was ready to go out there and play."
As for his Seahawks debut, the biggest takeaway of this performance was that he knows that he can go out in a game and make plays when they matter most.
"I know that I'm capable. Given the opportunity, I know that I'm capable to go out there and make plays and I'm for sure an NFL receiver. I feel like I proved that today."
White added, "Every opportunity that I've been able to get, I feel like I've done a great job with it. So just keep stacking that and then try to figure out a way where I can provide and also go out there and help the team get some wins."
