When it comes to volume statistics, Geno Smith's performance in Sunday's win over the 49ers doesn't jump off the stat sheet.
In a season in which he has thrown for more than 300 yards four times, Smith's 221 yards were his fourth-lowest total of the season, and he did not throw a touchdown pass for the first time in 2024. But a deeper look at the numbers shows that Smith still had a fantastic game despite those modest numbers, helping lead the Seahawks to a 20-17 win over the 49ers.
Smith completed 25 of 32 attempts—including 7 of 8 on the game-winning drive—giving him a season-best 78.1 percent completion percentage. But as NFL Next Gen Stats illustrates, he was even better than that number might indicate.
According to Next Gen Stats, Smith had a +16.3 percent completion percentage over expected (CPOE), Smith's highest since he had a +16.4 percent CPOE in last season's Week 2 win in Detroit. Smith was particularly sharp on short and intermediate passes, completing all 19 pass attempts of under 10 air yards for 121 yards and a +26.3 CPOE. On passes over 10 air yards, Smith was 6 for 12 for 100 yards and an interception.
"He was dynamite," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said after the game. "We talked about, after the pick, just sticking with it, we talk about clearing the next room, just go clear the next room and rock and roll. After he threw the pick, we got the stop on defense, forced a field goal, and we went right back down and scored the touchdown."
Adding to his standout performance, Smith had 29 yards on two scrambles on Seattle's game-winning drive, including the 13-yard game-winning touchdown, which was his second scramble touchdown of the season along with his 34-yard touchdown run against the Broncos in Week 1.
