Last week, rookie tight end AJ Barner caught his first couple of NFL passes, finishing the game against the Dolphins with three receptions for 13 yards, and this week in Detroit, he was able to get his first NFL touchdown on a 9-yard play.
"AJ's grown up in the past two weeks," quarter back Geno Smith said about the tight end. "You can see his confidence growing and it was great for him to get his first touchdown tonight. I think he's going to continue to excel and continue to get better. He's a guy that we're going to count on and so it was great to see that happen for him."
Barner played for a year at Michigan before being drafted, so scoring his first NFL touchdown in Detroit was a little special for him.
"Being at Michigan for a year, I felt like I had a solid career," Barner said. "But I felt like people didn't get to find out who the true version of me is. So, to be able to have a touchdown here tonight was definitely special."
Barner added, "I kind of felt like [the ball] was going to come my way and I was going to capitalize on the opportunity.
He finished the night with two receptions for 27 yards and one touchdown.
