Hasselbeck "Strongly Leaning Towards Playing Again"
Former Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who's coming off of his third season with the Indianapolis Colts, joined 710 ESPN Seattle on Thursday morning for a nearly 20-minute segment with Brock Huard and Mike Salk.
Hasselbeck, who turned 40 years old last September, started eight games in Indianapolis this past year as injuries sidelined starting quarterback Andrew Luck. Hasselbeck went 5-3 as a starter for the Colts in 2015, piling up 1,690 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions on the season.
"It was great," Hasselbeck said of his 18th NFL season, the first of which was spent on Green Bay's practice squad. "It was fun, actually. I've been up here, this is my third year in Indianapolis with the Colts and backing up Andrew Luck, and Andrew's tough, strong, physical, never gets hurt, and this year he got hurt and just kind of hit the breaking point, and I got to start. I think I started eight games. Wasn't sure how that would go, kind of at my age and all that, but it was great. It was fun. I felt awesome, actually, for probably the first four or five games, and it was just a blast to be in the huddle again. I had a lot of fun."
Hasselbeck, the Seahawks' all-time leader in passing yards (29,434) who led the club to their first Super Bowl in the 2005 season, said he physically feels able to play another year in the League, but hasn't made up his mind completely on whether to return or retire from the game for good.
"If you're a football player you start back up April 18, it's a grind, you've got to give it everything you've got," Hasselbeck said. "You've got to be all in. You've got to realize there are going to be injuries, it is going to be a physical game, you're going to get hit in the head a bunch, and even for me, likely being a backup, you've got to have the mindset that 'hey, you could have to start,' or get to start 16 games and then some. So you've kind of got to count the cost of what it would mean, what you're saying yes to and what you're saying no to, my kids are getting older.
"But all in all, I'd say I'm strongly leaning towards playing again, and we'll see."
