Will Seattle Use The Franchise Tag?
Beginning Tuesday, NFL teams can place the franchise tag on pending unrestricted free agents, a designation that gives a player a one-year contract valued at the average of the top five salaries at a player's position, or 120 percent of that player's previous salary, whichever number is greater.
The Seahawks have used the franchise tag 10 times since 1993, second-most in the League in that span to the Indianapolis Colts (11). But under Executive VP/General Manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll, Seattle has used the designation just once, franchising kicker Olindo Mare in 2010.
Teams have until 1 p.m. PT on Tuesday, March 1 to use the tag, but Sheil Kapadia at ESPN.com doesn't expect the Seahawks to place it on any player this year.
Kapadia writes: It's highly unlikely that the Seahawks use their franchise tag this year. Their top free agents are left tackle Russell Okung and linebacker Bruce Irvin. Both players are expected to test free agency and could end up signing elsewhere. From a financial perspective, it doesn't make sense for the Seahawks to use the tag on either guy.
