The Seahawks named former Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald their new head coach on Wednesday, making him the ninth head coach in franchise history. Macdonald takes over for Pete Carroll, the winningest coach in franchise history, and intends to build off of the success the franchise enjoyed under Carroll and executive vice president/general manager John Schneider.
"What an honor," Macdonald said after he and his wife, Stephanie, were greeted by team employees upon their arrival at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. "We are super excited to be here. Just getting to know John and the rest of the folks, the reputation of this place, what drew us here was the people. That's why we're here, to bring a championship back to Seattle and the 12s.
"We're going to have a lot of fun, we're going to work our tails off, and it's going to be an incredible ride. We're going to be here for a long time, and we're going to win a lot of football games."
Here are five numbers of note about the Seahawks' new head coach:
1
Team in NFL history to lead the league in scoring defense, takeaways and sacks. That team, of course, was the 2023 Ravens, who under Macdonald's leadership allowed just 16.5 points per game, recorded 60 sacks and 31 takeaways.
36
Macdonald's age, which makes him the youngest head coach in the NFL. Macdonald isn't without experience, however, having started in the college ranks with Georgia as a graduate assistant, and in the NFL with the Ravens in 2014.
4
All-Pro defensive players on Macdonald's defense in 2023: linebacker Roquan Smith and safety Kyle Hamilton, who earned first-team honors, and linebacker Patrick Queen and defensive tackle Justin Madubuike, who were second-team picks.
2
Harbaugh brothers under whom Macdonald has worked, spending much of his career on John Harbaugh's staff in Baltimore, and having served as the defensive coordinator at Michigan under Jim Harbaugh in 2021.
11
Ravens opponents in 17 games held under 20 points this season, including the NFC West champion 49ers, who scored 19 points and committed five turnovers in a 14-point loss to the Ravens. The Ravens also held five opponents to single-digit point totals, including the playoff-bound Lions (6 points), Browns (3) and the nine-win Seahawks (3).
