Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Thursday's preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

The news comes not long after head coach Pete Carroll announced that Lock, who ran the first-team offense in Tuesday's practice, would start against the Bears.

Carroll said the plan all along had been for Geno Smith to start Seattle's mock game and preseason opener, with Lock starting the next game, though that plan will now have to be altered.

"We had planned well back before the offseason even started to get to this game, the second game, Geno would be the starter in (the mock game) at Lumen and the opening game, then we would go with Drew in the second game," Carroll said after Tuesday's practice. "We're trying to follow that if we can.

"This was part the plan. Regardless of what happened, we were going to Drew a chance to start a game to see what happens. Fortunately, he has played really well, and he deserves a shot to play, just like everybody deserves a shot to play and show what they can do, so we've been able to stick to it."

Things are still very much up in the air when it comes to the quarterback competition, but even with Lock getting his chance to show what he can do with the starters this week, Carroll said he still views Smith as "the No. 1 guy" at the moment.

"Geno's still the No. 1 guy, he's holding onto his spot at this point," Carroll said. "I really like what Drew has shown us. You look at his passer rating and some of the stuff he did (against Pittsburgh), he did a great job. Both of our guys can play. That's what we do know, they both can play."

Carroll notes that the Seahawk are following "somewhat the same format" as in 2012 when Russell Wilson, Matt Flynn and Tarvaris Jackson were all battling for the starting job, but also acknowledged Smith has gotten a longer look with the No. 1 offense so far, saying, "Geno deserved more than that, he deserved the starting opportunity."
