The Seahawks added cornerback depth on Thursday, signing cornerback Willie Roberts. Defensive tackle Matt Gotel was waived/injured to make room on the 90-man roster.
Roberts, an undrafted rookie out of Louisiana Tech, took part in Seattle's rookie minicamp as a tryout player. A semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, Roberts started all 12 games for Louisiana Tech last fall, and ranked ninth nationally with 12 passes defensed while also adding 38 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. A first-team All-Conference USA selection, Roberts held opponents to a 34.8 percent completion percentage when targeted, according to Pro Football Focus.
As a junior, Roberts started 11 of 12 games played, recording 29 tackles, four interceptions and six passes defense. Prior to spending two seasons at Louisiana Tech, Roberts played at Stephen F. Austin, recording six interceptions and 21 passes defensed in 34 games.
