While heading into year 12, which is very fitting for a Seahawk, quarterback Geno Smith said he was still getting better – and in other words bigger, stronger and faster.
And yes, Smith has noticed these improvements in himself, but other Seahawks players have noticed the improvements too, like nose tackle Jarran Reed.
"Geno looks great, man," Reed said. "Geno looks great. He looked great last year. I think he looks so focused this year and his timing is good. His reads are good. Everything he's doing right now is elite. I think he's on elite level right now and I'm so excited to see what our offense has to bring this year."
Another defensive leader, Seahawks safety Julian Love, has took notice to the changes too.
"Geno (Smith) looked really good these first two days coming out which is always good. Usually, you see the defense starting super fast in camp traditionally. We have been doing well, but Geno has been throwing that thing. I give a lot of respect to what we have going on. I'm super excited for what we have, everyone is being utilized. There is so much balance offensively. I'm excited to see what we have."
There have only been three practices so far in training camp, so there's still a lot more to learn about the offense and see how high the ceiling is for the offense, but Smith feels like the offense is in a good place right now.
"It's a work in progress, we're only three days into camp. Like I said we got a long way to go. There can be no complacency in this group, and I don't see that. Everyone's got to continue to push themselves and try to get better every single day. That's the reason we're out here, that's the reason for training camp. You want to build up to the season, you shouldn't be at your best right now. But, I do feel like we're at a really good spot, and like I said we just got to push each other every day. We got to go in there and watch the film, clean up the things, the mistakes that we had on the field today, and take practice tomorrow with a vengeance, with a purpose, and try and get better."
To continue getting better at this point in his career, Smith said there's a couple of things, "Just a mindset of hard work, a tireless mindset, never satisfied, that type of stuff. Obviously, God is a lot of that, God given you got to be able to improve when you're working hard and to be 33 about to be 34 and I've gotten faster, I've gotten stronger, I put on more muscle. You know, you got to credit the strength staff here, my people back home who do a great job, and then that mindset that I've talked about of always wanting to get better and just trying to push yourself."
Along with getting bigger, stronger and faster, one place he's seen himself improve in coming into the season is in how he leads.
"Everything, I've gotten better at every single thing. Including leadership, all those things have got to get better and you know I'm going to take it day by day, that's kind of my mindset. I really don't look too far ahead but I do see improvements within myself, and it's a credit again to the guys around me. To my coaches, to my teammates, to the strength staff, to the training staff, down to Stu (McNabb) up in the cafeteria man. Everybody is doing their job, and doing their part."
Smith also likes to stay mentally sharp. How exactly? By playing chess.
"Me and Tyler [Lockett], we play on the phone a lot, but me and my buddies back home, we sit down and we actually play," Smith said.
The Seahawks held their second practice of training camp on July 25, 2024 at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center.
