Former Seahawks coaches Mike Holmgren and Chuck Knox, members of the team's Ring of Honor, took a step closer to election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with the Hall's nine-member Coach Blue-Ribbon Committee naming them two of the coaches up for consideration after trimming the initial list of 14 down to 12.
Along with Holmgren and Knox, the list also includes Bill Arnsparger, Tom Coughlin, Jeff Fisher, Alex Gibbs, Richie Petitbon, Dan Reeves, Marty Schottenheimer, George Seifert, Mike Shanahan and Clark Shaughnessy.
As the head coach of the Packers and Seahawks for a total of 17 seasons, Holmgren compiled a 161-111 regular-season record, and won 13 more playoffs games against 11 losses, taking his teams to three Super Bowls, winning one in Green Bay. In all, Holmgren took his teams to the playoffs 12 times, winning eight division championships. And in both Seattle and Green Bay, he turned struggling franchises into perennial contenders. Prior to him taking over in Green Bay, the Packers had just five winning seasons since winning the Super Bowl in 1968. He then went to Seattle, where, prior to his arrival, the Seahawks had reached the playoffs just four times, most recently in 1988. In addition to all of the wins and division titles, Holmgren also has a noteworthy coaching tree that includes multiple Super Bowl winners, including Chiefs coach Andy Reid, and he played a big role in the development of Hall of Fame quarterbacks Steve Young and Brett Favre, as well as Seahawks Ring of Honor member Matt Hasselbeck.
Knox, who had a 186-147-1 record over 22 seasons, was already an established winner before coming to Seattle, having won five straight NFC West titles with the Rams in the 1970s, earning two more playoff berths as the head coach of the Bills. In Seattle, Knox led the Seahawks to their first playoff appearance in 1983, and three more playoff appearances in 1984, 1987 and 1988, with the 1988 squad also earning the first division title in franchise history. Knox was a three-time winner of the AP NFL Coach of the Year Award, winning the award with three different teams while also becoming the first coach to lead three different franchises to division titles. He was inducted into the Seahawks Ring of Honor in 2005.
The list will be reduced to nine semifinalists later this month, then through a sequence of votes over several weeks, the Blue Ribbon-Committee will work its way down to one finalist for the Class of 2025, with that finalist then considered by the Hall of Fame's full selection committee.
The Seahawks franchise will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025 so in honor of its 50th season, we are recognizing some of the greatest players to play in Seattle.
