EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey—Only a few minutes into the second quarter, Sunday's game between the Seahawks and Jets had featured a full game's worth, and then some, of chaotic moments.
And up to that point, almost none of it was good for the Seahawks.
There were the two turnovers on kick returns, plus a muffed punt on a third that Seattle recovered, as well as a 99-yard kick return touchdown for the Jets, and just for good measure, there was also a blocked extra point by Leonard Williams, just the first big play in a game full of them for the veteran defensive lineman.
It was the type of sequence, all in the span of a few minutes of game clock, that you just don't see in an NFL game, and it led to the Jets taking a 14-point lead.
Then again, you also don't often see 300-pound interior linemen sprinting down the field for a 92-yard pick-six, and that also happened in the second quarter, with Williams dropping into coverage, tipping an Aaron Rodgers pass to himself, then showing off his wheels on the way to the first touchdown of his career.
And with Williams capping that bizarre sequence with a game-changing play, the Seahawks settled in, didn't allow another score over two-plus quarters, and scored 19 unanswered points to secure a 26-21 win at MetLife Stadium.
"Man, what a crazy game," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said to open his press conference. "I think that's the first time that that ever happened in the NFL. The whole series of events in the first half, but our guys were resilient, and we didn't bat an eye, we stayed the course. Had some crazy sequences of events that happened, but you have to stick to the plan, you got to stay together, and our guys did that. Then to be able to close it out was awesome for us, obviously."
The game calmed down somewhat after Williams' touchdown, but there were still some odd moments, most notably Seattle's inability to score after getting first-and-goal at the 4-yard line, then again at 1-yard line after a pass interference penalty in the end zone. That was followed by a Seahawks touchdown drive to take the lead, with a nine-play, 71-yard drive aided by multiple Jets penalties, as well as the Seahawks having to go for it on fourth-and-6 in their own territory because their punter, Michael Dickson, was hurt.
"That was probably one of the crazier games I've been a part of for sure," said safety Julian Love, who had a third-quarter forced fumble that set up a field goal. "That game had everything. I'm happy to get the win.
Love later repeated himself, noting, "This game had everything. Very crazy."
Among the things the game had was a Jaxon Smith-Njigba 24-yard catch on fourth-and-6 on a preposterously good throw from Geno Smith, who was backpedaling to avoid a sack, one of Smith-Njigba's four catches for a team-leading 74 yards.
"It was a crazy game," Smith-Njigba said. "This is the NFL, there's going to be crazy games like that, and it's just about how you respond. We know that, that's what we're built on, that's our foundation, the next play. Today was an example of that, just having to move on and make it right. I feel like we did a good job of that today."
Williams, the star of the game with his pick-six, two sacks and a blocked extra point, called it, "a funky game. There was a lot of stuff happening in this game, but overall, I'm just happy the way the team played with grit and just kept playing. It was a sloppy game on both sides, to be honest. There was a lot of stuff going on, and at the end of the day, we put it away."
While the Seahawks obviously didn't come into this game expecting to win in such strange fashion, they did come out of the game proud of how they stuck with it despite two 14-point deficits in the first half, knowing there was plenty of time to settle down and take control of the game.
"This is probably the most we never wavered," said defensive end Dre'Mont Jones. "We didn't have a negative thought in our mind. We just looked at each other and said, 'Let's go.' … Let's find solutions, let's find ways to calm this game down. There was a lot of chaotic stuff going on. There's fumbles, blocked (extra points), interceptions, a whole bunch of stuff that's outside of the box of a normal football game that's happening today, but as long as we stay consistent, we should find ways to win."
And because the Seahawks found a way to win, they open the month of December with a 7-5 record, one game clear of the Cardinals and Rams, who are both 6-6 after the Rams won Sunday and the Cardinals lost.
"It's what you want," said quarterback Geno Smith. "You want to be playing meaningful games in December. Coach talked to us. He said they remember what you do in December, so as a team, as a quarterback, I want to play my best football late down the stretch. I think we're growing as an offense. I thought, our offensive line played a tremendous game today. I thought just the guys in general, all went out there and they fought, like I said. We played together, complimentary football, even with the mistakes that we made. As long as we continue to play together, we're a feisty bunch. We got a chance to win all of our games."
