Seahawks Defensive Rally Not Enough After Packers Built Lead

The Seahawks found themselves down early and despite a defensive turnaround, the lead was too much to overcome.

Early in Sunday's game, the Seahawks found themselves in a less than ideal predicament – down 14-0 heading into the second quarter. The Packers found success early on running the ball and scored on their first two drives.

"We knew this team starts really fast," head coach Mike Macdonald said. "Defensively we didn't hold up on our end of the bargain about quelling that start on how these guys operate. We will look it the tape see where we fell short and move on."

Green Bay was able to extend their lead to 20-3 heading into halftime.

Heading into the half, the Packers had a total 235 yards and running back Josh Jacobs had 73 rushing yards, 38 receiving and a touchdown.

After the game, Devon Witherspoon put it plainly, "They came out and ran the football down our throat. That's all. Nothing crazy. We have to do better."

Jacobs was used early and often for the Packers to build their lead.

"It was just a lot of movement," Julian Love said on how Jacobs was able to find success. "I think it allowed (Josh) Jacobs to hit the hole pretty quick, and it was getting on our safety, getting in on me, especially Coby in that first half early, it was getting on him. I'm not sure kind of what they saw and what we were doing, but we shifted. Obviously, Mike (Macdonald) saw something. It was shifted, what we were doing. We were able to kind of bottle them up, going after that first quarter, first half."

After halftime, the defense was playing more like the defense that helped Seattle win their last four matchups, and while Seattle's defense wasn't able to put a lock on Green Bay's offense completely, they were able to hold Green Bay to just a field goal and a late fourth quarter touchdown.

During the second half, the Packers only had 134 total yards compared to their 235 first half yards.

"We just had to settle down, communicate, play our game," Coby Bryant said on the changes the defense needed to make. "And that's what we did towards the end of the game."

And while the game wasn't going how Seattle wanted it to, Witherspoon said there wasn't a sense of panic on the sideline.

"There wasn't any panic on the sideline. We knew we were beating ourselves. We came out at halftime, and we got it fixed. We just have to be better on defense to start the game."

The Seahawks were missing their starting quarterback during the second half, with Geno Smith going down with a knee injury and weren't able to get much going on offense, except for a pair of field goals and a 24-yard Zach Charbonnet touchdown run. With the hole they found themselves in and the inability to get going on offense, the defensive performance, despite turning itself around in the second half wasn't enough to help win the game.

When asked if this loss is different, given how much these last few games can mean, Bryant said, "Not at all we have another good team coming in here next week and [we just have to] go back to work, that's all."

Ernest Jones IV added, "Go in to work tomorrow, correct these wrongs. We've got to start faster on defense. I think we're hell to mess with when we're on it. First half, we were not. I just think we've got to go back to the drawing board. Our mindset has been playoff mode, so now it's legit now. We gotta go."
