Seattle's offensive line has been trying to find it's rhythm and through 14 weeks, they were able put together their best showing of the season so far.
"Hats off to the offensive line," head coach Mike Macdonald said after the game. "I thought they blocked their tails off. I think what you're seeing is just continual progress on all of our processes and our guys getting on the same page. This is something that we need to build off of moving forward, but the guys did a great job."
After the game, Macdonald gave out game balls, one went to Zach Charbonnet, who had a career day and another went to offensive line coach, Scott Huff.
"How many yards rushing? 176. And I'm pretty sure no sacks. This ball goes to Scott Huff," Macdonald said as he was giving out the game ball to Huff.
The offensive line didn't give up any sacks – a first this season, only two quarterback hits, and the running backs finished with 176 rushing yards, 5.7 per carry.
"They deserve a lot of credit," Macdonald said about Huff and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. "I have been saying for weeks that we're working on this thing. We're working through all the processes by no stretch of the imagination have we made it, but it's great to get a breakthrough on productivity on how we want to play. I thought [Ryan Grubb] called a great game and onward we go. I think now hopefully this generates some more confidence for us in the things that we've been doing and the inputs that we're putting in. I thought we played a complimentary game today. The ball wasn't in jeopardy, Geno [Smith] didn't take any sacks, so that's what it's going to take to win, especially late in the year."
Macdonald added, "I thought that it was probably [the offensive line's] best game to date. Geno [Smith] deserves a lot of credit too. He's playing really decisive, really accurate. There's a lot of big time throws going on out there, especially in critical moments at the end of the game. It's a multiple-score game, but that can change in a blink of an eye. To try to keep moving the sticks on some of those second down throws where it kept drives going, that was big time. Being able to manage the clock and all the situations, he's doing a tremendous job right now."
The Seahawks have had some inconsistencies in their offensive line lineups, up to this point, because of injuries and position battles. Last week vs. the Jets and Sunday's win vs. the Cardinals, Seattle saw the same five players on the line.
"It's great to go two games in a row with the same five guys," Macdonald said. "Anytime you have continuity and you can stack reps, that's important. Now sometimes you have to make necessary adjustments or guys go down and guys have to step, which has happened throughout the season, but it's been great to get two weeks in a row where the same five guys are out there and they can build off of these performances."
With the help of the line, Geno Smith went 24 for 30 for 233 yards, one touchdown and a 110.1 passer rating, as mentioned before, he also didn't take a sack.
"I thought they played phenomenal," Smith said about the offensive line. "The way they played, we can win every game we play, I think our offensive line is only getting better. We have some young guys out there who are stepping in and stepping up. I thought (Seahawks OL) Sataoa (Laumea) played a great game, and then obviously getting 'Abe' (Seahawks OL Abraham Lucas) back has been a benefit for our offense. They've got to keep it up. They set the standard, so they've got to keep it up."
Smith added, "I thought the pass protection was awesome. Like you said, (there were) only two hits and no sacks. Anytime you get to sit back there as a quarterback and not get touched it allows you to go through those reads and your clock is a little bit slower because you know those guys are going to hold up. I thought (Seahawks Offensive Coordinator Ryan) Grubb called a great game, but I thought the line powered us through this game and we're going to need them down the stretch."
Laken Tomlinson said the game felt "fantastic." "Whenever you get over 100 yards [rushing], you know the offensive line's been working," he said. "Real proud of the guys, everybody taking the challenge this week and putting up the yards."
Adding that sticking to the game plan, communicating and making adjustments helped the line see success in Sunday's win. "Guys did a great job communicating on the sideline, making adjustments. Big shoutout to coach [Scott] Huff, really sitting us down and getting us to our right points. I think we played a really good game together as an offensive line."
