Damarious Randall re-signed with the Seahawks on Friday, and the plan is to move the veteran defensive back to cornerback, the position he played for the first three seasons of his career with the Green Bay Packers.
Randall, a first-round pick out of Arizona State in the 2015 draft, was a safety in college but moved to cornerback with the Packers. In three seasons in Green Bay, Randall started 30 of 39 games played, recording 10 interceptions, 32 passes defensed and 144 tackles.
Randall was traded to Cleveland in 2018 where he made the move back to safety, starting 26 games over the next two seasons, recording four interceptions, 2.5 sacks, 15 passes defensed and 146 tackles.
After spending training camp with the Raiders last year, Randall signed to Seattle's practice squad in September, was elevated from the practice squad for two games, then eventually promoted to the 53-man roster. Randall appeared in 10 games for the Seahawks, playing primarily on special teams.
Moving Randall to cornerback gives the Seahawks another experienced player to add to the competition after both of last year's Week 1 starters, Shaquill Griffin and Quinton Dunbar, left in free agency. Other Seahawks corners with starting experience are D.J. Reed, who can play multiple positions and who finished the season starting at right cornerback; Tre Flowers, who has started 37 games at right corner over his three seasons; and free-agent addition Ahkello Witherspoon, who started 33 games in four seasons with the 49ers, playing on both the left and right side.
