The Seahawks signed P.J. Walker on Monday, adding a third quarterback to the roster ahead of this week's mandatory minicamp.
Walker gives the Seahawks a third quarterback and veteran presence in that position room along with starter and two-time Pro-Bowler Geno Smith, and Sam Howell, a starter in Washington last season, who was acquired in an offseason trade.
Rookie nose tackle Buddha Jones, who signed as an undrafted free agent in May, was waived/injured to make room on the 90-man roster.
The 29-year-old Walker has appeared in 21 games in his career with nine starts, including two last season for the Browns, the latter of which came in Cleveland's Week 8 loss to the Seahawks at Lumen Field. Walker threw for 248 yards, one touchdown and a pair of interceptions in that loss, the second of which was a Julian Love interception, off the helmet of a blitzing Jamal Adams, that helped the Seahawks secure a 24-20 victory.
Walker's NFL career began as an undrafted free agent with the Colts after a standout career at Temple, and after spending time on and off the Colts' practice squad during his first three seasons, he signed with the XFL's Houston Roughnecks, leading the league with 1,338 passing yards and 15 touchdowns in five games before the season was shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Walker returned to the NFL in 2020, signing with Carolina, where he would start seven games and appear in 15 over three seasons before joining the Browns last year.
Walker joins a quarterback group of Smith and Howell that has made a good early impression on Seattle's new coaching staff as they learn the new offense led by offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb.
"They're awesome," Grubb said last week. "They're freaking awesome. They are. I think that they're both really, really hard workers. They're very diligent, intelligent and I know that it means a lot to them and I think that their leadership in the room and how they react and work together says a lot about the kind of guys that they are. That they understand the team concept and they're both fighting to get better every day. And I couldn't be more happy with number one, where they're at. And then the type of guys that management has brought into this place have done a really good job."
