Wednesday marked the end of an era in Seattle, with the Seahawks making the tough decision to release receiver Tyler Lockett in a salary cap-related move.
Despite Lockett's memorable decade-long run in Seattle coming to an end this offseason, his 10 seasons in Seattle will never be forgotten, a career that saw him arrive as a dynamic returner and exit as one of the greatest receivers in franchise history.
To celebrate Lockett's standout career, here are, in chronological order, 10 of the top moments of his Seahawks career:
1. The Seahawks execute a rare trade up to select Tyler Lockett in the third round of the 2015 draft.
John Schneider has never made it a secret that he likes trading back in the draft in order to acquire more picks. The draft is an inexact science, so having more picks generally gives teams more chances to find players who will help them down the road. But early in the third round of the 2015 draft, Schneider and Pete Carroll went against that trend and, in a rare move for them, packaged multiple picks and sent them to Washington, acquiring the 69th overall pick, which they would use on Lockett, in exchange for third, fourth, fifth and sixth-round picks.
Sending that many picks to Washington in exchange for Lockett showed how much the Seahawks coveted the standout receiver and return man from Kansas State. Lockett wasted little time making the Seahawks look good for that decision, and he continued doing so for an unforgettable decade.

2.Lockett takes it to the house in his NFL debut.
While Lockett would eventually develop into a top receiver, the Seahawks also picked him to help in the return game, and Lockett wasted no time showing he was up to the task. Lockett provided a glimpse of his explosive ability in the preseason, returning both a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns, then he showed he could make those type of plays when it counted in Seattle's 2015 opener. On the first punt return of his career, and second touch in the NFL, Lockett raced 57 yards for a touchdown, kicking off a rookie season that would see him earn first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors as a returner.
Lockett, who also had a kick return touchdown as a rookie, became the first player since Gale Sayers to have at least five receiving touchdowns, a kick return touchdown and a punt return touchdown as a rookie. And Lockett's standout return ability, combined with his receiving numbers that grew as his career progressed, allowed him to compile 13,125 all-purpose yards over 10 seasons, the second most in team history behind Steve Largent's 13,369, and the third most among all active NFL players behind Cordarrelle Patterson and Tyreek Hill.
3.Lockett returns from a serious leg injury to play all 16 games in 2017.
Off to a strong start two years into his career, Lockett saw his 2016 season come to an unfortunate end when he suffered a broken leg while hauling in a long catch in a Week 16 game against Arizona. Despite surgery and grueling rehab, Lockett made it back for the season opener in 2017, and was able to play in all 16 games that season, punctuating the year with a kick return touchdown in the season finale against Arizona, a year and a week after he broke his leg against the same opponent.
Lockett's comeback and ability to play that entire season highlight a level of durability that was one of the more underrated traits he displayed in his Seahawks career, especially considering he was regularly the smallest player on the field when he suited up.
After breaking his leg in 2016, Lockett missed the final regular season game, plus a pair of playoff games, then he didn't miss another game until 2021 when he contracted COVID-19 and had to sit out one game. The following year, Lockett missed one game after breaking his finger and having surgery, but was still able to return after that one-game absence. So in total, Lockett played in 161 regular season games over the past 10 years, missing only two due to injury, and one due to COVID, a remarkable feat for any NFL player, let alone for one checking in at 5-foot-10, 182 pounds.
If 2017 was Lockett's comeback year, then 2018 was the season that saw him emerge as a truly elite receiver once he was back to full strength. While Lockett came up just short of a 1,000-yard season in 2018, a mark he would hit in each of the next four seasons, he did finish with 965 yards on 57 catches and a career-best 10 touchdowns. Most impressively, Russell Wilson had a perfect passer rating of 158.3 when throwing Lockett's direction for the entire season, completing 80.3 percent of his passes to Lockett while averaging 13.6 yards per attempt with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions.
4. THAT toe-tap touchdown catch in the Seahawks' 2019 win over the Rams.
You know the one we're talking about.
Hosting the Rams on Thursday night football, the Seahawks were driving when, facing pressure, Russell Wilson escaped the pocket and surveyed the end zone. Lockett, so in tune with his quarterback after years of scramble-drill plays, looked for space before finally making his move to the back corner of the end zone where Wilson's pass somehow got just over the L.A. coverage and into Lockett's hand for a ridiculous toe-tapping catch as he fell out of bounds.
The catch may very well be the best and most memorable of Lockett's career, but it was hardly an anomaly. Of Lockett's many, many positive traits as a receiver, sure hands and body control both rank near the top, and those skills have allowed Lockett, despite being undersized, to make so many contested, high-degree-of-difficulty grabs during his NFL career. On that particular play, and so many others, Lockett pulled off such a difficult catch, it seemed almost impossible to believe, at full speed, that he could have possibly gotten both feet in bounds, but replay confirmed it was a score while showing, in slow motion, how great of a catch it really was.
5. Lockett turns in one of the best single-game performances in franchise history, going for 15 catches, 200 yards and three touchdowns in Arizona.
Throughout his career, Lockett has, without complaint, shared the spotlight with other receivers, ranging from Doug Baldwin and Jermain Kearse to DK Metcalf to Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Lockett has always been a great teammate regardless of who was getting the most targets, and he spent the final game of the 2024 season rooting for Smith-Njigba to break his Seahawks single-season record of 100 receptions, a record Smith-Njigba ended up tying.
But as much as the humble Lockett was willing to share the spotlight, it should not be forgotten that he was also more than capable of taking over a game. That was never more evident than in a 2020 game at Arizona in which Lockett had 15 receptions for 200 yards and three scores. The reception total matched a franchise single-game record held by Steve Largent, and yardage total was the second highest in team history, trailing only Largent.
6.Lockett earns his first Steve Largent Award and is the team's nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award
Two of the top individual honors a Seahawks player can receive each year are the Steve Largent Award, which is voted on by players and given to the player or coach who best exemplifies the spirit, dedication and integrity of the Seahawks, and being named the team's nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.
Lockett earned both of those honors in 2021, and would repeat both, being the team's Man of the Year nominee twice, and the winner of the Steve Largent Award three times. Lockett is one of just six players in team history to earn multiple Man of the Year nominations, and one of five to win multiple Steve Largent Awards. Only Lockett, Bobby Wagner and Russell Wilson have received both of those honors multiple times.
Lockett's off-field work included everything from hosing Tulsa Publish School students on visits to Seattle as part of a job shadow program to awarding scholarships to students to donating to initiatives that support youth sports to hosting football camps, and there were also plenty of moments away from the spotlight such as when he and Bobby Wagner, for multiple years, teamed up to pay off school lunch debt for Renton School District Students.

7.Lockett shows support for an injured teammate and friend.
The Seahawks ended their 2021 season with a win over the Cardinals, a game that unfortunately saw safety Quandre Diggs exit with a serious leg and ankle injury. While the rest of the team flew back to Seattle to start its offseason, Lockett elected to stay in Arizona to be with Diggs, a close friend dating back to their days as Big 12 opponents.
With Diggs already at an Arizona hospital, Lockett, of course, could have afforded the most luxurious ride available to go visit his friend, but Lockett being Lockett, he instead piled into a rental minivan with members of the team's PR and digital media staff to catch a ride, which included a quick drop off of staff members at the airport.
Lockett not only stayed behind in Arizona with Diggs, he then flew with his friend and teammate to Green Bay where Diggs had surgery, staying with him throughout the process.
For all the things Lockett was throughout his Seahawks career—dynamic playmaker, leader, selfless teammate, pillar of the community—what it all really boils down is he is just a really solid human being for whom it was natural to put others ahead of himself.
8. Lockett lends his voice to an Emmy-winning documentary about Black Wall Street and his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Football has been Lockett's career for the past decade, but it was far from his only interest. A well-rounded human, Lockett has other outlets, including video production, and he also has strong bonds to his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He combined those interests in 2022 when, during the offseason, he took part in an NFL 360 feature about Black Wall Street and the Tulsa Race Massacre that destroyed the Greenwood District in 1921.
Lockett, who became an outspoken advocate for the survivors and victims of that horrific crime, interviewed survivors, learned more about his city's history, and narrated the video, titled "Through the Ashes: The Story of Black Wall Street" that went on to win a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Long Feature.
"It was very life changing," Lockett said in 2022. "As you get older, you hear stories—stories about the history and what we once had and everything that took place. Actually being able to dive deeper into it just brought the story to life. Going down, being in the basement, knowing that this is where people were at when there was a fire on the other side of the brick wall, it just kind of brings everything full circle.
"And then being able to interview one of the survivors, Mother Fletcher, that was probably the most life changing out of the whole entire couple of days that we were there, just because she was seven years old when that took place. When she was talking and explaining some of the events that took place and the things that she's seen, one of the things that really hurt me the most and stuck with me the most was the fact that she said a hundred years later, when she goes to sleep at night and she hears noises, she has to remind herself that those aren't the same noises that she heard a hundred years ago."
9. Lockett closes out the 2022 season by going over 1,000 yards… again, giving him yet another connection to Steve Largent.
By catching four passes for 54 yards in Seattle's 2022 regular-season finale, including a 36-yard touchdown that tied the game in the third quarter, Lockett helped the Seahawks secure another playoff berth, his sixth trip to the postseason in eight seasons at that point. And those yards also helped him eclipse 1,000 yards for the fourth straight season, a significant feat for Lockett, as it tied him with Hall of Fame receiver Steve Largent for the most consecutive seasons with 1,000 or more receiving yards in franchise history.
That team record is just one of several ties Lockett has to Largent. Both are from Tulsa, Oklahoma and share the same birthday, and because of his impressive career in Seattle, Lockett now ranks second behind only Largent in the team record books for receptions (661), receiving yards (8,594) and receiving touchdowns (69). Lockett also won the Steve Largent Award three times, a prestigious honor, voted upon by teammates and given to the player or coach who best exemplifies the spirit, dedication and integrity of the Seahawks.
10. Lockett's game-winning touchdown catch in a 2023 overtime win over the Lions.
One of the Seahawks' best wins in the 2023 season came in Week 2 when they went to Detroit and, in the Lions' home opener, earned a hard-fought overtime win.
In that game, Lockett, who also had a fourth-quarter touchdown, caught the game-winning touchdown in overtime. It was a short catch and run, punctuated by a dive for the pylon, that on it's own didn't stand out as anything too spectacular, but that catch is also a good example of just how often Lockett was able to come through in a big moment.
Throughout his career, all the way through the 2024 season, Lockett had a knack for making big catches on third down to extend drives, or for coming up with big catches on game-winning or game-tying drives late in the fourth quarter.
"He's so clutch," quarterback Geno Smith said after Lockett came up with one-handed grab on third down to help the Seahawks close out a season-opening win over the Broncos. "Just think about all the catches he's made in clutch situations. Time and time again, week after week, he's the guy who is going to show up… That's who he is and that's why we love him. We are going to continue to rely on him and he's always going to show up in those moments.
"That's who he is. Big time players make big time plays in big games. I remember hearing that when I was a kid. Tyler Lockett is the epitome of that. Any time there is a play to be made he's going to play the game."
