Head Coach Mike Macdonald

Opening Statement…

Alright, man what a crazy game. I think that's the first time that that ever happened in the NFL. The whole series of events in the first half, but our guys were resilient, and we didn't bat an eye, we stayed the course. Had some crazy sequences of events that happened, but you have to stick to the plan, you got to stay together, and our guys did that. Then to be able to close it out was awesome for us, obviously. A lot of things obviously we've got to clean up on really in all three phases. We have to protect the ball better and then the kicking game for sure. So, we'll definitely review that and we need to be able to convert the zone, you know, the low red zone on offense, but it was great to be able to close it out. It was a great drive at the end by our offense. We nominated Michael Dickson as an honorary player of the game for not being available for us having to go for it on fourth down, but in all seriousness, I mean do want to like, just officially, I don't know how this works, but if we can nominate Leonard Williams for player of the week, he's just playing at an all-time elite level. You know, to have a pick six, I think they told me he was going about 17-and-a-half miles an hour, which was pretty fast for a man that size, so he's playing out of his mind right now."

On if Dickson being hurt is why they went for it on fourth-and-6 and fourth-and-1...

Yeah, that was that was fun conversations in the headset.

On if he was unable to punt the rest of the game...

The plan was for him not to punt the rest of the game. So, either J-My (Jason Myers) could have gone out there and punted or we would have gone for it, so would have been one of the two.

On how big Leonard Williams' pick six was...

Well, I mean, that was a team play. Just getting to his landmark, making a play the ball, obviously and then the rest of the I mean, I can't wait to watch it on tape, but it just felt like everybody got into plus mode. We got some really critical blocks to kind of escort Leo in the endzone, so everybody deserves credit, but that was a big time playing in the game. Probably the play of the game.

On Julian Love's second-and-10 play prior to the pick six...

Oh, it was a great play. I mean, that second, third, fourth down was you know, we just talk about being in a rough spot just where we want be on defense and those guys staying mentally, just present from play to play, but to be able to see that play and make it was awesome. We weren't able to create a lot of third-and-longs, so it was great to get them in that situation finally. Lost to convert earlier in the series, but you know it's the NFL, they got great players too, and they made a play.

On debating having Jason Myers punt on fourth-and-six...

Yeah, I did think about it, but it was one of those deals where it was best for us to go for it.

On Michael Dickson's injury...

He got what did they call it? Back spasms, I think is what we're calling it. So, he's in good spirits and everything. It's just a matter of we just have to get it loosened up, I guess. I'm not sure how that works.

On the third-and-26 play where the Jets got 24 yards...

Well, it was an extended play and I think our flat player ended up plastering one of their guys and so the zone got kind of drained. We'll look at that and make sure our roles are sound, so, you know, we're not getting drained in zones and stuff on extended place, but I think that was just that.

On Love's performance this season...

Yeah, I mean both of them, Coby (Bryant) too, and then Rayshawn (Jenkins) coming in and playing at a high level and in our nickel and dime spot. Really those three guys right now are letting us do a lot of things that most, you know, some defenses aren't able to. Being able to play man to man, playing all three areas of the zones, all three levels of defense, excuse me, and then being able to blitz so they kind of do everything, which lets us opens up our playbook."

On the general message at halftime..

Yeah, it was just, hey it might have been the craziest first half of all time and we're down, you know, whatever amount of points it was like five points or something, and so, just kind of stick to the plane and let's go.

On if the kickoff issues were fundamental errors...

Yeah, it seemed like it's just kind of a comedy of things on each one on. I'm talking about our kickoff, right? Yeah, a couple missed tackles here and then we had a miscommunication on another one. We got to take a look at that and make sure we're on the same page and we're going in the right direction.

On being in first place now in the NFC West...

Well, we talk about December football and this is when you want to be playing your best ball. I wouldn't say this is our best game, but we won, and that's all that matters, so it's about stacking those wins and you got to play a certain brand of ball to win in December and this is all you can ask for, is a chance to take it home down the stretch. So, we're right in it and off to Arizona we go.

On how often does a nose tackle drop during a game...

How often does a nose drop? We just tell everybody hey, you owe us two drops a game. So, you can rush the rest of the time.

On DK Metcalf's injury...

He tweaked his knee and then did a bunch of tests and stuff. I think he's doing alright now. We'll see.

On Sataoa Laumea's performance in his first start...

You know, I think our offensive line for the most part, I thought we ran the ball well in spurts. It seems to be more consistent. I think he, probably started off a little slow on a couple of assignments but bounced back and gave us a winning performance.

On Williams performance this season...

I mean, I would just have a hard time thinking that anybody's playing better than him right now, so we'll take Leonard over everybody else.

On Geno Smith's sack on fourth-and-1...

I think they did a great job of matching the route and then and then so that made him hold the ball. You know, those are situations where it's kind of, this sounds crazy, but it's better to throw it away than take a sack in that situation, because the reason you're going for it is if you don't get it, you're getting the feel position. But credit to them, they made a great play.

On Smith's performance overall...

I mean, we won the game, he took care of the ball for the most part. He made some critical fourth down extended plays that not a lot of people on this planet can make and then, thought he managed the game well. We didn't have to run any timeouts. I mean, those are the types of games, that's the way he has to play for us to win. And he did that.

On the pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba...

I think that was fourth down, wasn't it? I mean, just everybody involved getting into extended play mode and then Gino giving him a ball he can catch. I mean, that's a tough ball to catch for Jaxon and he did a great job tracking it and come down with it. It was a big time.

On redzone possession from the four-yard line and the thought process behind it...

I don't want to get into the thought process on it, but we do have to be better in those situations. We have to be able to convert those. So, we'll look at how our game planning it, what we're calling kind of all the things right there, so we need to be more effective in those situations.

On how the defensive line is playing....

It's a team, it's a team pass rush, and you have to be able to knock out early now in plays to get the quarterback to hold the ball in pass situations. So, I mean, I know Leonard's playing incredibly well right now, but a guy like Jarran Reed comes to mind that is playing really good football for us. I think Byron (Murphy II) can play the A gap and the B gap really well for us on early downs. He doesn't get as many pass rush opportunities because of where Leo's at and because we're trying to maximize his opportunities as well, but when he (Murphy) does get those chances, he's done a great job. He's got heck up a future. Don't have a great feel for how the edge guys played right now, but Boye (Mafe) and Derick Hall and Dre'Mont Jones, I think Dre'Mont's been playing really good ball lately, so those three guys are I mean, the front right now is I think there's a really good chemistry in that room and so, you know, they're happy for each other's success and they're playing like that. They're not we're not playing selfish football up front. We're playing smart, we're playing together and that's what's going take for us to win down the stretch.

On taking advantages of penalties in the fourth quarter...

Well, yeah I mean when team's give you opportunities to take advantage of breaks you have to capitalize on those things. I could speak for our team. I don't know how many penalties we had didn't feel like as many, it was like four or five penalties. So, our guys are our guys are playing clean football, which is good. We need that, but it's good to take advantage of opportunities when we get them.

QB Geno Smith

On the first half…

Yeah, I mean, that first half was definitely a little crazy, but I thought we did a great job at weathering the storm. Coach (Mike) MacDonald talked to talk to us about really just locking in and banding together for the rest of the season. I thought today was an example of that. When things were kind of going haywire, I thought guys pulled together. There was great leadership on the sidelines and then Leo (Leonard Williams) made the play that really turned the game. And from there, we were in the game and found a way to get it done.

On whether he realized Michael Dixon was hurt and that the team would be going for it on fourth downs…

Yeah. They communicated to me in the headset, so I was aware of that and we found a way to get it done. The circumstances weren't all perfect, but we found a way.

On Williams' interception returned for a touchdown…

He was moving. First of all, the catch was outstanding. Just to tip it to himself, and then caught it in stride. Most big guys, they're not picking their knees up as they cross that end zone, but I thought he was doing a great job. He was moving on that one. That play changed the game for us.

On the injury to DK Metcalf…

Just down there, praying for him, wanting him to get up and when I heard him talking to the doctor, I felt like he had a good shot to be okay, but initially, when he went down, he was kind of grabbing his leg, or, I don't even know, his ankle, foot, I don't know, but he was down, so I was just really praying for him, just hoping he was alright, and he was glad to see him get back in the game.

On where Metcalf was on the 4th-and-one pass that resulted in pass interference…

It was only two receivers out, so he was number two.

On whether there was significance to winning in MetLife Stadium…

Just because it's the next game. Not going to make it about myself. Like I said, I really did enjoy my time in New York and I think our team, we're on a mission right now, you know, just for the next opponent. No matter where we play, who it is, no matter what happened in the past, you've got to eliminate the emotions and go out there and play the game and do the right thing. So, it was just the next opponent and I'm glad we got it done.

On what it means to have sole possession of first place in the division in December…

It's what you want. You want to be playing meaningful games in December. Coach talked to us. He said they remember what you do in December, so as a team, as a quarterback, I want to play my best football late down the stretch. I think we're growing as an offense. I thought, our offensive line played a tremendous game today. I thought just the guys in general, all went out there and they fought, like I said. We played together, complimentary football, even with the mistakes that we made. As long as we continue to play together, we're a feisty bunch. We got a chance to win all of our games.

On Sataoa Laumea's NFL debut…

I thought he did a great job. Honestly, I thought in the run game, just a couple of those big runs that we had, he was right there and in the thick of it, in the double teams. I thought he did a great job and I think he's only going to gain from this experience. I think he's going to gain confidence, and I think it's going to help him in the future. I think he's going to be a really good player.

On whether the run game made progress today…

For sure, I thought the run game really led us today. Obviously, we made some timely pass passes in some critical situations, but for the most part, we grounded it out. We had to run the ball. They were playing two-high shell most of the game, and playing a lot of zone, which is what we see a lot, so when we can get up on those double teams, and double the shade, double the three tech, and get Ken (Kenneth Walker) up to the safety, and get Zach Charbonnet up to the safety, great things happening. I thought the receivers did a great job blocking in the run game and I thought (Ryan) Grubb called a great game. I thought he was patient. He stayed with it.

On the fourth-and-goal at the one-yard line…

Yeah, we've got to get better at that. If I was to be critical of anything, I think that's the main thing. We've got to be better in the short-yardage area and that's all of us. It's on all of us.

Those are the situations where you can really punch it in and dominate a game. If you can dominate short yardage and you can get all those, you're going to be a really good team.

On how big Charbonnet's touchdown was after that missed opportunity…

It was huge, but it started with the stop on defense. They got the stop, allowed us to get the ball back, and then we had great field position. We were going for it on fourth down. DK made a great play, guy held him, and then Zach punches in. When you talk about complimentary football again, I think that's what happened. We all played together. We all did our jobs.

On the toughness of the Seahawks' wide receivers…

Yeah, I've said it, I've been on record saying it. We've got the best receiver group in the League. Those guys, make clutch catch after clutch catch, big play after big play. You know, somewhere around the third quarter, DK got going, put us in a position to score, and then Jackson (Smith- Njigba) making the big on the fourth down to give us a shot again, so as long as those guys continue to work the way they're working, they're going to be great. We've got so much talent in that room, and those guys do a great job throughout the week. We expect them to play well. So, when stuff like that happens, it's expected.
