The Seahawks came into this week hoping they might get receiver DK Metcalf back from injury, but in the end, the knee injury that sidelined Metcalf last week will keep him out for at least one more game.
Metcalf, who suffered an MCL injury in Seattle's Week 7 win in Atlanta, has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Rams, as has tight end Noah Fant (groin), and nose tackle Cameron Young (knee).
"We listed DK as out," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said. "He just needs more time. It's nothing he could have done differently, we just need more time for him, so that's what's best for him and the team."
Macdonald said there was not a setback this week that changed things, just that, "it just needs time. Guys that are stepping in will be ready to roll."
Asked if Metcalf will be back after Seattle's Week 10 bye, Macdonald expressed cautious optimism, but added, "with these things, we said week-to-week from the get go, I think that's where we're at at this point. So I think it's fair to say we're taking it week by week at this point. I think that's a fair assessment."
Fant, who injured his groin in Wednesday's practice, "is going to need some time," Macdonald said. "So he'll be out this week."
Asked about the significance of the injury, Macdonald said it doesn't appear Fant will go on injured reserve, but it's not clear if he'll be back after the bye.
"It's going to be some time," Macdonald said. "We don't anticipate him being on IR, but we're unsure of his availability after the bye right now."
In addition to the players ruled out, linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who was acquired in a trade last week, is questionable for Sunday's game against his former team, the result of neck stiffness that showed up this week.
"E.J. was out today with a neck, it just stiffened up on him," Macdonald said. "So we'll take that day by day, but we just took care of him today."
Not on the injury report with a game status is tackle George Fant, who returned to practice last week from injured reserve. Fant, who opened the season as Seattle's starting right tackle, injured his knee in that Week 1 victory and has been replaced by Stone Forsythe and rookie Michael Jerrell for the past seven games. Macdonald would not yet say if Fant will be activated from injured reserve for the game, a move that would have to take place on Saturday.
"He's full," Macdonald said of Fant's practice status. "All the necessary transactions, O-line wise, rest of the team, we're going to make those tomorrow, then we'll be ready to roll."
Asked about Fant's week of practice, Macdonald said, "George looks good. George looks really good."
As for tackle Abraham Lucas, who also returned to practice last week, his first practice since last season, there's still no set timeline on his return. Lucas had knee surgery following the season, and the plan since he returned to practice was to wait until after the bye to assess things.
"It was good," Macdonald said of Lucas' week. "I don't want to say on schedule, because the schedule is, let's keep progressing and then we'll make a decision after the bye on where we're at. He's gaining confidence, he's working hard, he's getting comfortable being uncomfortable to a certain extent, and that's where we're at right now."
Macdonald was also asked about a pair of players currently on injured reserve. Asked if he was still expecting outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu back this season, Macdonald said, "I do. Again, it's not a hard and fast thing, but from our people and early initial assessments of where he's at in his progress, we're optimistic we'll get him back at some point."
As for safety Rayshawn Jenkins, Macdonald said, "At some point we'll expect Jenks to be back as well."
The Seahawks practiced on Thursday, October 31, 2024 at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center as they get set to host the L.A. Rams in Week 9.
