The Seahawks activated right tackle Abraham Lucas from the physically unable to perform list on Wednesday, clearing the way for him to potentially make his 2024 debut in Sunday's game against the 49ers.
Tackle George Fant, who injured his knee in Seattle's Week 9 loss to the Rams, was placed on injured reserve to make room on the 53-man roster.
While the move doesn't guarantee Lucas will play Sunday—his 21-day window following his October 23 return to practice is up this week, meaning he had to be added to the roster or sit out the remainder of the season—Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald did express optimism that Lucas could play against the 49ers.
"Abe practiced today and San Francisco is a realistic expectation at this point," Macdonald said after Monday's practice.
Macdonald later added, when asked about Lucas' return, "I think that the best version of Abe is going to give us the best version of our offensive line, so we want to make sure that he's ready to go. But from what I saw today, he looked really good, looked good last week, and there's a timeline here that we're kind of abiding by and there's certain milestones and hurdles you need to cross in order for him to play his best ball. So hopefully that's this week."
Lucas, a third-round pick out of Washington State in the 2022 draft, won the starting right tackle job in camp as a rookie and started 16 of 17 regular-season games, as well as Seattle's wild card playoff game. A knee injury limited him to just six games last season, however, and Lucas had surgery following the season, causing him to start the season on the PUP list.
With Lucas sidelined, the Seahawks have used three different starting right tackles this season, Fant, who left both of his two starts with a knee injury, Stone Forsythe, who is currently on injured reserve, and rookie Michael Jerrell.
