The Seahawks signed outside linebacker Jamie Sheriff, bringing back the undrafted rookie who was a preseason standout.
Sheriff, who signed with Seattle in August, had three sacks in Seattle's final two preseason games, and likely would have been a candidate to begin the season on the practice squad, but he was claimed by the Panthers after the Seahawks waived him while reducing the roster to 53 players.
Receiver Ty Scott was released to make room on the practice squad.
Sheriff was waived by the Panthers after playing a combined 28 snaps on defense and special teams in Carolina's opener, making him available for a return to Seattle.
After going undrafted out of South Alabama, Sheriff got a tryout at Seahawks rookie minicamp but did not end up signing with Seattle or any other team. While he waited for his opportunity, he got a job back home in Ridgeland, Mississippi, delivering beer for Southern Beverage Company, then the Seahawks finally called in August, giving him a chance he took advantage of in camp and the preseason.
"He's a guy that really stood out during the rookie tryout," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said after Sheriff had a pair of sacks in Seattleās preseason finale. "Just kind of the message with all the guys; if there's not a spot for you right now, we're still invested in your growth and development. To his credit, he didn't skip a beat since he's been here. He should be proud of the way he played."
