Updates On Uchenna Nwosu, Abraham Lucas & Other Seahawks Injuries From John Schneider

Seahawks general manager and president of football operations John Schneider provided a few injury updates following Wednesday’s practice.

Perhaps the most significant move for the Seahawks as they reduced their roster to 53 players was the transaction they didn't make, electing not to place outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu on injured reserve.

Nwosu, who injured his knee in Saturday's preseason finale, is currently on the 53-man roster—in theory the Seahawks could put him on injured reserve at any point between now and the opener—and general manager and president of football operations John Schneider said he doesn't anticipate that changing.

"We hope so," Schneider said when asked if Nwosu will be back on the field soon. "If you guys have spent time with Chenna, this is a pro, now. The guy attacks the day like you want every professional football player to attack it. He's going to do everything he can to get back."

Nwosu staying off injured reserve, which would have required him to miss four games, does not necessarily be ready for Week 1.

"I don't know that," Schneider said. "Too early for that. He's made progress. It's an injury that you kind of have to take day by day."

Also leaving Saturday's game with an injury was Artie Burns, but he was back on the field Wednesday.

"He got banged up a little bit today at practice, but he responded," Schneider said. "It's some sort of toe thing, but it didn't appear to be that bad."

Linebacker Jerome Baker was also practicing, Schneider noted, a good sign for the starting linebacker who has missed time with a hamstring injury.

Safety Rayshawn Jenkins is also working his way back from injury and it's not clear yet if he'll be ready for the season opener against Denver.

"He's doing well," Schneider said. "He was out running this morning. I think everybody feels good about where he's at. He's made progress. But whether or not he's able to go, we don't know that yet."

Schneider said it's also not certain yet whether or not center Connor Williams will be ready for the opener. Williams, whose 2023 season was cut short due to a torn ACL, signed with Seattle earlier this month and has been ramping up his participation in practice last week and this week.

"We don't know that yet," Schneider said of Williams' Week 1 status. "That's going to be up to Mike (Macdonald) and the coaching staff, the offensive coaches, and (vice president of health and player performance Sam Ramsden and head athletic trainer David Stricklin) and see how everybody feels about it. He's doing whatever he can to get ready."

The Seahawks will open the season with three players on the physically unable to perform list—tackle Abraham Lucas, nose tackle Cameron Young and safety Jerrick Reed II—meaning those four will miss at least the first four games of the season.

On Lucas, who is coming back from offseason knee surgery, Schneider said, "We're going to play the long game with him and make sure we're doing things appropriately. This is for his career, it's not just for the 2024 season. We want to make sure that we're doing the right thing by Abe, which also is the right thing for the Seattle Seahawks. We have to be careful with it, Sam and David Stricklin and those guys have a great plan for him, and we'll keep working that plan. It has nothing to do with Abe's work ethic or anything, he's attacked this thing as much as we can, that's just where we are right now."

Asked if he has any concern about Lucas not playing this season, Schneider said, "I don't, no. We're just being as cautious as we possibly can."

When asked about Reed and Young, Schneider said, "All three of them (Lucas, Reed and Young) are doing great. They're all busting their tails to get ready…. Unfortunately, we're going to get banged up throughout the season, and these are three extremely talented guys that we can have ready at a later date to be able to go to if need be. Hopefully when they're ready to rip, we can do it. It depends on what your depth looks like at a certain time of the year."
