Featuring postgame quotes from the following:
Head Coach Mike Macdonald
Opening Statement:
"Yeah, I mean, just not a good enough performance on our front. Got to give Detroit a lot of credit. I thought they had a great plan offensively. Definitely, I mean, they borderline – they just outplayed us on the defensive side of the ball for us. I will tell you this, our guys fought the heck out of that game. They went down to the last second and that's what I'm most proud of right now and we're going to hold onto that and that's a foundation that we've built here that we're going to push forward with.
We're four weeks into the season and, look, the message all week has been that we're on the foundation of our football team and where we want to be and it's obvious, we're not the team that we want to be yet, and we shouldn't be the team that we're going to be. We have time to grow as a football team, we have a short week, we have to have a sense of urgency about it, and we need to take the next step. But just wasn't good enough, especially on the defensive side of the ball today. So, we've got to make it right and move forward."
On if the injuries Seattle has changed what they wanted to do in the game:
"I wouldn't say it changed much. I wouldn't say it was a significant change in terms of the plan. You can't be just making rash decisions."
On the explanation he received for the penalty on Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett on fourth down:
"I didn't get an explanation."
On what they showed him tonight:
"Well, we got the stop at the end – the safety, so that's probably one of the few bright spots of the game. Just shows you we're just not going to give up, no matter the situation. So, that's going to be us."
On why Detroit was able to be effective with gaining yards after the catch:
"Yeah, I think that's a compliment of theirs. One, good by them, two, the things that we've been executing on a high level and defensively taking right angles, tackling, I think all the stuff that we emphasize on a daily basis, wasn't coming to life. So, we'll watch the tape and attack it and fix it and move forward. But you can't allow all that RAC yardage and create those explosives, for sure."
On the thought process of going for the two-point conversion:
"Well, at the time we felt like we probably – we had a chance at getting a stop on defense, and then just the way the game was going, having a chance to win it in regulation if we needed. We were going to need another score regardless, so make it a six-point game."
On if he thought Seahawks WR DK Metcalf may have caught a pass in the endzone that was forced incomplete:
"It looked like it initially. It's tough, it's moving fast and then the explanation I got was that they were looking at it – the booth was looking at it, and they confirmed that it was incomplete. So that's what happened."
On Seahawks QB Geno Smith's performance:
"Yeah, I mean, we were forced to chuck it around in the second half and I thought he was poised. It was a loud environment, Lions fans did a great job, but operation-wise, I thought we were clean, I thought he was poised, thought he was accurate. I thought he played a heck of a game. I don't know what the stats are, but I thought he played really well."
On if facing Detroit on the road was a litmus test for them:
"I wouldn't say it's a litmus test, it just shows us we're not the team that we need to be at this point. I mean, that's just – that's what it is. Just wasn't good enough. They did what they did to win the game, they did a great job, they had a great plan, and we came up short. So, it's, how do we move forward right now as a football team and take the next step because we've got a short week coming up and there's urgency – I mean, there's always an urgency, but we've got to go to work here over the next few days and make this right."
On if he attributes Lions QB Jared Goff's success in throwing the ball downfield to coverage breakdowns or not having a fully healthy defense:
"No, we've got to play it better. Again, a great plan, the one long one to (Lions WR Jameson Williams) 9 was a good job by them, but it was a massive bust on our end that we have no business making. So, we've got to look inwardly, we've got to – when we hit adversity we can't be pointing fingers, we can't be blaming, it's just, 'Hey, where's my area of responsibility, where do I fall short?' And then, as a team, that's how you grow. So, that's what we need to do."
On Seahawks WR DK Metcalf's fumble:
"Yeah, we'll look at the play. We're never going to – I mean the guys is fighting his tail off to get extra yards, just dragging people down the field – guy had a good hit, found the ball, and it came out. So, we'll try to make it right, but yeah, we're never going to tell guys to go down early or anything like that."
On the offensive line's performance tonight:
"Yeah, I felt the O-line played well, I thought they played well, and their run game didn't really come alive until the second half, but it felt good. It felt better than it's been. So, excited to watch the tape and see where we improved."
On any updates on Seahawks FS Julian Love's injury:
"He's got a quad contusion. I don't really know what that means. Just, we'll see, but wasn't able to finish obviously."
On what Lions QB Jared Goff did that was effective against the Seahawks defense:
"Yeah, they – look they operate at a high level. I mean they had a really good plan. We're on record that Jared's a great quarterback – played clean, they ran crisp routes, and we obviously didn't deny the ball. That's about as obvious as it gets. So, we've got our work cut out for us on defense. We have to improve quickly."
On injury updates for Seahawks inactive players today:
"I don't know. Just – it's a function of how fast they can improve, and they're doing everything they can to do so, and we'll see as the week kind of progresses here."
On if Seahawks LB Jerome Baker could have played today:
"We tried, it just became clear going into the weekend that, as the game kind of got closer, it was like, 'Ah, probably not going to be able to go.'"
On what kind of spark Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker III had in his return from injury:
"I really felt him. I mean, talk about one of the guys that's going to fight to the bitter end. This guy is tough as nails, you never – I mean, the play's not over, it's just like he can – plays are designed to go in certain gaps and with him it just could go anywhere, and he runs extremely hard, plays hard, he cares. We're going to be leaning on him moving forward, so it's good to have him back."
On if he can see both teams playing each other again in the playoffs:
"Yeah, we've got to – I mean, look, we've got to handle our business. Detroit's a great team, they've shown it, they've proven it, they proved it again tonight and we want to be a great team, so we have to become a great team. We want to become the team that we believe that we can become, and so that's our focus."
On what having 10 different receivers catch passes says to him as far as the balance offensively:
"Well, I think it speaks to everybody. It speaks to the protection, speaks to the unselfishness that our skill guys have, the precision that we're playing with some of the routes. (Seahawks QB) Geno (Smith) just playing within the system and throwing the ball where it needs to go, and we've got to continue to do that, and if everybody is a threat at the same time, it's hard to take away one guy and have success. So that's what we expect. You need to be able to do that, you can't just throw it to one guy every snap. They'll take that away."
On where his players fighting shows up the most:
"Well, yeah, offense is responding, defense wasn't able to get stops, especially in the second half, and there's a feeling that you see in the guys' eyes where no one's hanging their heads, everyone's just laser-focused, poised, just like we've talked about throughout the Denver game. That's a characteristic of our team that we've had throughout the season, so proud of that. It's easy to start looking around and woe is me type of idea, but that's not our guys."
QB Geno Smith
On how he is feeling after taking hard hits tonight:
"Yeah, I'll be fine, getting ready for next week."
On the fourth down play where Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett was called for a penalty:
"They said that he picked the guy. I think you probably could see, we all could see, he made no contact with the guy. But in a situation like that, critical drive like that, that's kind of sometimes the difference in these games. Unfortunately, the refs got that control, got that power."
On what he told his teammates after the team was behind by 14 points:
"Just keep playing. There's really no words to say, we're all in this thing together. We don't expect things to be easy. Adversity is a good thing, especially early in the season. And so, for us to come out the way that we did in the second half, and you can see the fight that we have on this team, the resiliency we have on this team, and just the type of men in that locker room, the way that they all fight for one another. We got ourselves back in the game, and gave ourselves a shot at the end, and that's really all you can ask for when you start out like that."
On the type of men in their locker room:
"Yeah, we're just a group of bad MF-ers, man, that's just the type of guys we got on this team, and no one had any doubt, and that's the thing that you could see. When we walked out there on that field, we were down 14, but there was no doubt that we were going to give ourselves the chance to win. Unfortunately, we didn't do enough, I didn't do enough, to get that done. But it's one game, move on, go to next week."
On what Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker III gave the team tonight:
"Man, he's special. He's special. You see the plays that he's making. I don't think any other running back could do some of the stuff that he's doing. I'm surprised every time he makes one of those just crazy plays. To have him and (Seahawks RB) Zach (Charbonnet) back there, to have that one-two punch, and to be able to utilize both of those guys within our offense, it just makes us that much better. And so, just having (Seahawks RB Kenneth) Ken (Walker III) back, it's great. I just enjoy having him on our team."
On the scrambles that he ran tonight:
"Yeah, I mean, at a certain point, you've just got to try to make a play, and Coach called some plays that were a little bit longer developing. We needed that at the time, and (Lions DL) Aidan Hutchinson, he's getting up the field pretty fast, and they were getting a pretty solid rush. And so just being able to step up and help our tackles, and get up and out in the pocket, and then create something on the scramble, whether that was on the move or pulling up, just trying to make a play, and give us a shot there."
On the Seahawks play calling and the game plan coming into the game:
"I think that's just how the game unfolded. Obviously, we want to be aggressive, that's something that we always want to do. When you're behind in a game, (Seahawks Offensive Coordinator Ryan) Coach Grubb, he has tremendous confidence in us and myself. I have no problem with him putting the game in my hand. I'm actually hoping for that every time I go out there, and so, whenever that's the situation, I just got to do what I got to do to make the right plays. Hats off to the O-Line, that's a lot of pass protection out there against a really good defensive line, and I thought they played tremendous, and it really gave us a shot."
On the fourth-and-three play where the snap came early and he threw to Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett:
"Yeah, we were down on the clock right there. Really, I was thinking either, you know, in that situation, I mean it's probably not best to use your timeout, so I was just going to take a delay right there, and just take the five yards, and give ourselves a shot. (Seahawks C) Connor (Williams) saw the clock running down, and his instincts kicked in, he snapped it, and that was that, we were kind of scrambling, basically became a scramble drill at that point. Just looked up and the clock was down. It was just low, and we had a shift on it, we just didn't have a chance to really get the play off at the time."
On how much more of a hostile environment Ford Field was today compared to last year:
"It wasn't that hostile. We was out there doing our thing, as you can see. But hats off to the Lions, they beat us today."
On what losing means to this team means:
"No. We're three-and-one, that's what it says, and now we've got to get on to the next one. That's just football, that's NFL football. I think the only team that went undefeated was the '72 Dolphins, so we're just trying to go out there and win every game we can. Today we didn't get it done, but that's why we've got next week, so we're going to improve and get back on it and get ready for next week."
On how long he worked on the lateral play:
"Yeah, yeah. I think about like two weeks. Two weeks ago, (Seahawks Offensive Coordinator Ryan) Grubb put it in, and it was just getting it ready for the right moment, and he called it at the perfect time. I thought the execution was great, (Seahawks WR) Jaxon (Smith-Njigba) made a great throw right there, and (Seahawks RB) Zach (Charbonnet) got up there and made the first down. I thought all around it was a great play."
On what allows them to convert on third down better this year than in previous years:
"Yeah, I'm seeing, first of all, it starts with protection. You know, actually it starts with (Seahawks Offensive Coordinator Ryan) Grubb calling a great call, and then obviously, getting up to the line of scrimmage, setting the protection, and then thinking about third-and-14, those are longer situations, plays have got to develop, you've got to get to the sticks—if not, get close to them—so the line's got to protect for a little bit. And so, I thought the protection was great on those situations, and then, obviously, a couple of them were, I was able to scramble and make some plays with my legs, and give us some extra time. And I thought the receivers did a great job of finding windows and getting to the right spot, and it was just all-around great execution by everybody."
On Seahawks TE AJ Barner getting his first touchdown:
"Yeah, I think AJ has grown up in the past two weeks. You can see his confidence growing, and it was great for him to get his first touchdown tonight. I think he's going to continue to excel and continue to get better. He's a guy that we're going to count on, so it was great to see that happen for him."
On if he liked the decision to attempt the two-point conversion and if he thought Seahawks WR DK Metcalf caught the first attempt:
"I did think he caught the first one. I'll have to go back and check it, but I thought he got his feet in. (Seahawks Head) Coach (Mike Macdonald) said go for two, we go for two. I like the confidence, there's nothing wrong with that, we've just got to execute it and get it done for him."
