The Seahawks hired Klint Kubiak as the team's new offensive coordinator on Sunday, ending a search that began earlier this month after the team parted ways with Ryan Grubb following the conclusion of the 2024 season.

Kubiak, who spent last season as the offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints, will take over leadership of the Seahawks offense, his third offensive coordinator role in the NFL having also held that title with the Vikings in 2021 and the Saints last season.

Among Kubiak's many tasks in his new role will be building an offense that can help the entire team play with the identity that head coach Mike Macdonald is looking for.

"We want (the offense) to mirror our football team," Macdonald said in his end-of-season press conference. "All the things we've been talking about… We want our offense to be a physical unit and dictate terms to the defense, and play complementary football, and get the ball to our playmakers frequently in space, and let our quarterback play fast."

The son of former NFL head coach and offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, Klint Kubiak played safety at Colorado State, where he served as a team captain, before beginning his coaching career in 2010 at Texas A&M.

Kubiak's first NFL job was as an offensive quality control coach with the Vikings in 2013, then after two seasons there he went back to the college ranks for a year, coaching receivers at Kansas. Kubiak returned to the NFL first with the Broncos from 2016-2018, then took over as quarterbacks coach for the Vikings in 2019, earning a promotion to offensive coordinator in 2021. Kubiak spent 2022 with the Broncos as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, taking over play-calling duties late in the season, then in 2023 he joined the 49ers as Kyle Shanahan's passing game coordinator, helping quarterback Brock Purdy post NFL-leading marks in passer rating (113.0), yards per attempt (9.6) and yards per completion (13.9) on his way to Pro Bowl honors. Kirk Cousins also earned Pro-Bowl honors under Kubiak's leadership, passing for 4,221 yards and 33 touchdowns with just seven interceptions in Kubiak's one year as coordinator in Minnesota.

Kubiak's lone season in New Orleans got off to a great start, with the Saints scoring 91 points while gaining 811 yards in a pair of wins, but several key injuries took a big toll after that hot start, contributing to the team cooling off and losing seven in a row after a 2-0 start.

Despite all of those injuries, including several on the offensive line—nine different linemen started games this year—the Saints still finished the season in the top half of the league in rushing yards, touchdowns and yards per attempt, and their 37 sacks allowed were fewer than the total given up by 19 of the league's 32 teams.

Having a coordinator who can get the most out of an offensive line was no doubt a draw for Macdonald, who wants to see more from that unit as the Seahawks look to continue to develop some of the young players selected in the last two drafts like center Olu Oluwatimi, guards Christian Haynes, Sataoa Laumea and Anthony Bradford, and tackle Michael Jerrell.

"We want more from our offensive line, guys know that," Macdonald said. "But I believe in the guys that we have and any opportunity we have a chance to develop those guys and make our team better, we're going to do it."

And the way Macdonald sees it, Kubiak is stepping into an attractive situation taking over an offense that features plenty of firepower while working for a first-class organization.

"I think this is a heck of a job," Macdonald said. "It starts with the organization. All the reasons why I felt like this was such a great place to be have been backed up tenfold, so it starts there. And our players—shoot, we've got great players man, we've got a great young core. I think it's a heck of a job, I think it's the best job out there."
