Head Coach Kyle Shanahan

Is there a point there where you don't have Mason, obviously you don't have Christian, all the other guys you can list, you're going how are we Band-Aiding this together? Or do you just think, I thought the guys were going to win this thing anyway?

KYLE SHANAHAN: I mean, you know, with Deebo (Samuel) also, I mean towards the end, the last possession -- what's his name? Drawing a blank. Taylor, he got hurt so I was afraid that we were down to our last one with Isaac, especially when he got that long run. That was smart of him giving that touchdown to Juice, but I did get worried right then. Before that, though, we had enough guys, especially with Deebo being able to help out and do all that stuff, too, so we were all right.

Mason, he went back in. Did he aggravate something?

KYLE SHANAHAN: Yeah, he thought he was going to be all right. He went back in and it just hurt him too much, so he went out, I think. I think that was the first play and then he was out just in case of emergency.

The fact that he could have come in in an emergency, does that suggest it's not serious?

KYLE SHANAHAN: I don't know. You never know. Adrenaline on these days, I mean, during games it's a little bit different. We'll find out more tomorrow when that's down and get the x-rays and stuff.

What's going through your mind when you guy haves the 20-point lead, give up the kickoff and next thing you know, they have the ball with a chance to take the lead?

KYLE SHANAHAN: Just -- I'm not going to go to what's happened on our last two losses. Just staying locked in, not trying to get any negative feelings and just try to do it one play at a time. We try to keep our team that way but it's not like I talked to a bunch of people right then, so just calling plays and stuff, you don't try to think that way. Our goal is to be locked in the entire game regardless of what the score was and I thought the guys played like that.

Considering how the moment and how much you needed it, that throw from Purdy to Kittle, the first touchdown. How clutch was that?

KYLE SHANAHAN: Which one? There was two of them. The first one was awesome. That was a long third down. We were obviously struggling in the red zone to make a big play like that. I think it was third and goal from I want to say the 10, but that was huge. It was a dime right in the corner. It was a hell of a route and catch by George, and I thought the second one was just as impressive. We called a lookie to B.A. They played it coverage where two people were on him. He went across the board and had a hell of a throw to George.

We asked Brock about some of the red zone stuff, he said maybe he's just got to be more decisive, something like that, pull the trigger. Did you have that conversation with him and do you think he did that more tonight?

KYLE SHANAHAN: Yeah, I think the hard thing with the red zone, there's not one thing. There's a few plays and Brock's saying that because there's a few plays he could have been more decisive on and had, but that's not the whole red zone struggles but when you struggle running the ball, have some -- didn't have a lot of great looks and then you miss a few that we could have scored on, Brock's always going to own up to that stuff, but that wasn't really the theme. He was real decisive today, made two big-time throws there on third down and it was a step in the right direction at least.

The challenge that you made that you did when they -- what were you told in terms of what angle they saw, whoever let you know and then what was the explanation that they gave you?

KYLE SHANAHAN: It was awesome by Hamp, because he said you could tell by how the guy's hand moved that the ball hit him and then that's all they saw but he couldn't 100% see the ball but he said you could tell how the hand moved and with it being Thursday Night Football, I thought for sure they'd have a bunch of camera angles so once he believed that it happened, we threw it thinking we'd get some better angles and they told me that he didn't and then about two minutes later I heard all the guys in the box freaking out saying they saw another angle and it was a fumble.

So the official told you they didn't have the --

KYLE SHANAHAN: Yeah, they only know what they see. They didn't see what everyone else saw on TV.

Who told you that the finger moved?

KYLE SHANAHAN: Hamp. Yeah. Brian Hampton. (Laughter).

With all the offensive stuff, Renardo Green's interception came at a really good time so just how did he make that play, and what did you see?

KYLE SHANAHAN: It was huge. I just saw it looked like they sailed it a little bit over DK or maybe underthrew it and he cut in front of him. It was a hell of a play by him. Hell of a job by Malik, too, getting in the pick. Thought a rookie stepped up big-time today, all of them, but Renardo was huge coming in for Mooney. Mooney was a game-time decision. Tried to get him going. He tried to go, but workout didn't get well before the game and Renardo and the whole defense stepped it up.

Your team has faced some of these games before early in the season when things aren't going right, has won a lot of them. Is that something you communicate to them or do you feel it in a week like this where this team just has the feeling that it's going to be able to pull a game like this out?

KYLE SHANAHAN: No, I mean you, you know that we're sick about those two losses that we had and we know, you know, I talked about some losses are harder than others and when you feel like you had those won, especially division games, that's made us sick about it, and, you know, we've gone on a stretch here the last two years where we won a lot of games in a row and a lot of the fourth quarters and some of these win streaks the last two years haven't been that tight. Guys have been able to relax a little bit and stuff and we've been talking about how these two losses are a reminder of how the NFL works.

I think we got a little spoiled in that way of just human nature of sometimes feeling too relaxed and you can never feel too relaxed. I thought we played real well in the second half, but that doesn't mean it's easy to win. It's kind of -- that's how it works. We played well, they played well. They came back and made some plays which made it tighter and I was glad that our guys could fight through that, realize that games are really never over where you can just sit and chill in the fourth quarter. You got to go beginning to the end and we got that experience today.

What did you see in Guerendo? Did you feel like he was on the verge of breaking a big one?

KYLE SHANAHAN: I mean, you always feel like guys are close. We were running the ball pretty well all day. When they're really going to commit to stopping the run and try to get in those eight-man fronts, we got a good bounce read where we got outside and usually when there's not two safeties there, which I don't think there were, you break them and he's got the speed to do it. Said he's a hair, an eyelash slower than Raheem and they had a pretty fast guy chasing him, but he said he wanted to give that to Juice so it ended up working out well and got to run more time off the clock.

Did you want to see him slide there at the end?

KYLE SHANAHAN: Hell no, we want him to score. (Laughter) I don't think he slid. That's what he's claiming. I think he got -- I think 21's a fast player, and he get him a little bit there at the end I think. I'll see it. You guys saw it. But ended up working out better for us.

Given how Mooney has matched up with DK, was there some pregame concern about how you're going to deal with Metcalf?

KYLE SHANAHAN: Not really. I mean, he wouldn't have done that anyway tonight, just being on an injury and I think D-Mo is one of the best corners in the league. I love D-Mo and we got a young rookie in Renardo stepping up. I think Ike's done a hell of a job. I think we got a lot of players in our secondary.

How close was it with Chavarius? I mean, we saw him --

KYLE SHANAHAN: It was close enough to where it was a game-time decision. You know, he went and worked out and it was close but couldn't go.

Another special teams blunder I guess you would say. What can you do about that now? There's like one a game now. Do you go in there? Do you get involved? What can happen now?

KYLE SHANAHAN: I thought the special teams made some plays today. They got a fumble for us, a huge recovery, which I forget whether that led to a field goal or a touchdown. Last week they scored a touchdown with a blocked kick returned for a touchdown. I thought we didn't have a great kickoff and from what I saw live, we had an unblocked guy who missed a tackle and then they hit the lane, so we got to get better at tackling. Would love to get a better kickoff and stuff and we got to keep challenging ourselves as coaches, as players, everybody. You know, especially when you got some guys down on defense. You guys can see that and it's even worse on special teams when that happens. But we got to do better. But I'm still happy they made some plays today too.

Are you challenging the kicker to make a tackle?

KYLE SHANAHAN: Hell no. I don't. (Laughter) I don't know how I feel about that anymore. When they breakthrough and they're the only line left I would never be the teach that says just let them score, but dang that's two weeks in a row and I just got his name last night and Matt was unbelievable today. He was three for three on field goals and that was huge for him to stop them. It looked like they could have scored if he wasn't there. I just hope he's all right.

You got his name last night -- (inaudible).

KYLE SHANAHAN: The first time I saw him, yeah. Yeah, I don't waste thoughts on stuff that I don't need to know. Like same with all the injury questions. I really don't learn stuff I don't need to know.

The strategy to have him kick it right at the goal line, you wanted it to be further than that?

KYLE SHANAHAN: Yeah, you would like that and it was struggling with a little bit so when that happens, you try to get more air on it so it gives our guys time to get down there, but it obviously didn't work.

QB Brock Purdy

Brock, you said during the week that you saw a lot of things Seattle's defense that you saw from Baltimore last year with Mike Macdonald but you obviously performed a lot better this time out. Were there things you saw this game you kind of thought okay, I see this, now I know how to navigate it?

BROCK PURDY: Sort of. I think just going into the game, you know, if they run this, this is my answer and simple as that. I just try to keep it simple and just check the ball down when I needed to and hit my number one or number two in my progression as efficiently as I could and I just kept it simple. Last year in that game, I feel like I just got out of rhythm and I was trying to force stuff and it just -- I just wasn't playing in the right mindset of being aggressive, being smart and taking what the defense gave me. So I learned my lesson in that game and coming into this game, obviously new personnel, it's the Seahawks, not the Ravens so to me it was, right, similar scheme, yes, but this is what we're trying to attack and how can I be efficient as best as I can? So that was my mindset.

Brock, you mentioned the kind of need to find your identity as a team and you have a game like this that you need to win and you have some injuries and unseen replays and all these things going against you. What kind of step toward finding your identity do you think you took tonight?

BROCK PURDY: Yeah, obviously there's always going to be stuff that you can clean up and for us, our standard is high here and so I think a lot of us will go to, all right, we could have done this or that and be better here, but I think at the end of the day, man, it's a team sport and so to go four quarters with all these different kinds of motions and parts of the game and to be able to rally together and defense get a turnover and us score a touchdown at the end, that's team football, man. That's the sport that we play, so I feel like we did take a step in the right direction for sure and we're always going to be hard on ourselves and need to grow and get better at, but I really do think that we all, as a team, came together and found a way that ended really well.

Would you please take us through the touchdown passes to Kittle and your trust value with him?

BROCK PURDY: Yeah, the first one you talking about?

Both.

BROCK PURDY: Both. The first one, man, yeah obviously a third down play but for us, I saw just him have leverage on the outside and I just needed to give him some space, he did a great job of breaking down and being at the right depth and at the landmark and he's really good at that so for me, it's just trusting and laying it on the sideline knowing that my guy can go get it and the fact that he kept his two feet in was crazy. So awesome job on that and then the second one, same thing. It was pretty tight coverage, he had a safety coming down on him and then he crossed-face, tight window and it just comes down to that component of trust, man. That's how -- that's both of them. Both touchdowns were just a trust factor. So something that we've continued to grow at throughout the offseason and throughout the games that we've played together and tonight it showed really well, so very proud of him.

Brock, did this feel like how it should feel? Like did you kind of feel like this was a get right kind of game for the offense?

BROCK PURDY: I mean, yeah, every opportunity we step out on the field, man, we want to do that. We want to get better and prove to ourselves that we're going to play at the standard that we need to play at and that we're capable of playing at and so tonight was another opportunity, it was a Thursday night game and a great team in the Seahawks, great environment, so for us to come out and just do our job, do it well and be efficient I thought for all of us, like I said, the right step in the right direction and so there's stuff that we still get better at but more than anything, man, I'm proud of just how we all stuck together as a unit and when guys got banged up or went down, the next guy came in and did their job really well so that's a good sign for all of us and we just got to continue to walk this road together.

Brock, what would you say about the rookies and the performance they had tonight speaking of stepping up?

BROCK PURDY: Yeah, it was awesome, seeing Renardo get his interception. Malik on the defensive side, that always fires us up on offense, and obviously Isaac getting in at the end and pulling away. It was sort of like a little throwback memory of like when Jordan Mason got in a couple years ago and he had his run at the end and so, but for those guys to step in, man, it's the NFL. This ain't college. It's the real deal. You're playing against the best of the best so for those guys to show up on Thursday night, a prime-time game like that, it means a lot to all of us as a team and them showing that, so we all got their backs and we're going to continue to grow together.

WR Deebo Samuel Sr.

(On his touchdown play and what he saw from the safety) "I really wasn't even looking at the safety. In the beginning, I kind of had to fake block the outside linebacker and he fell off and I saw the ball in the air. Once the ball is in the air, we're always taught to attack it, and then whatever happens, that's it. It's off to the races."

(On if this game felt like a must-win situation) "It was definitely a must-win. But we kind of look at must-wins a little different. Must-wins are like if you lose, you're done. So at the end of the day, we treat it as a must-win for sure to get back on track. We have this mini-bye and then we get back to work on Monday or Tuesday, whichever day Kyle [Shanahan] wants to have us practice."

(On being able to meet these moments as a team when their backs are against the wall) "Not beating ourselves. Not turning the ball over. Really that's the main thing. The defense is getting turnovers. We had two today, two picks. Two rookies stepped up on defense and made plays for us."

DL Nick Bosa

(On if there was a different sense of urgency going into this game) "I think there was, yeah. We obviously want to bring a high sense of urgency every game. But when your backs are against the wall, it kind of brings it out of you. I'm just glad when the momentum swung there, we stuck with it. That was kind of the message all week. We got the win."

(On meeting the moment as a team and winning games when they need to) "We could definitely do better all around. We kind of let teams back in it. We've been through so many situations in so many different games that we're experienced. And that helps in this league."

(On what goes through their minds as a defense when they give up a kickoff return touchdown and then an offensive touchdown back-to-back) "We talked about, good or bad, keep that same, even-keeled, next-play mentality. And it was crucial to do that there."

S Malik Mustapha

(On how the rookies performed tonight) "It's a testament to all the work we put in. I trained with Renardo [Green] during the pre-draft. These are just moments that we all talked about, dreamed about, prayed about. For that to come into a reality is a blessing. I have to thank God for it. Earlier this week, I was getting more comfortable and my teammates had more faith in me, trust in me. My coaches have more faith in me as well. It was time to put it on display tonight. It just shows it goes from me, Renardo, even Isaac Guerendo, Tatum [Bethune] recovered the kickoff fumble. We have good guys here, we have guys that want to work. We have guys that share the same common goal. It was a blessing to see that coming to light today. And most importantly we got the W out of all that."

(On his interception) "Just reading Geno [Smith]. Renardo [Green] had good coverage on [Tyler] Lockett and I just went on the same path. [He] overthrew it and I had to capitalize when the opportunity comes to me. Next time, I'm going to try and stay more in control so I don't run out of bounds. But definitely wanted to secure the ball I got. I didn't do it last time when I played the Patriots so it was special to get another opportunity to grab it this time."

(On how his ankle injury) "Just a low ankle sprain. Nothing serious. It was just really irritated and I couldn't return. I'm not worried about it at all."

RB Isaac Guerendo

(On his long run) "The o-line did a great job opening up the seam, and I just hit it right there. At the end, unfortunately I had to give away my first touchdown, but it was a team decision. I wanted to come out here with a team victory, and that's what we did."

(On if he really gave away his first touchdown, since Kyle Juszczyk said the pursuing defender was fast) "I'm sure he was fast, but I kind of had it in my mind once I looked to the sideline and everybody was like 'Get down,' so I had to make a business decision."

(On if he felt excited while running downfield while also evaluating the game situation) "There was a lot of that. But, like I said, once I saw the seam and I hit it, I saw people on the sideline saying get down. You never know where that decision is coming from, so I just wanted to be safe, be smart right there. I already told Jus (Kyle Juszczyk) he owes me one at the end there. But I was just happy to come out with a team win."

(On if protecting the ball was his highest priority) "A little bit, but as a running back that's always your mentality. The ball is everything. So you've always got to protect it. But, obviously in a situation like that, you want to protect it a little bit more. Really, just trying to keep two hands on the ball at times there at the end of the game so you could solidify the victory."

(On the play of his fellow rookies) "It's exciting. There's a lot of talented guys in the rookie class, so I'm excited to see some of those guys step up and make plays. I'm really happy for them and excited for what's ahead for us."

FB Kyle Juszczyk

(On Isaac Guerendo's run...) "I don't know if he slid down by himself or not. I think he did. But, man, what a way to end the game."

(On if he owes Guerendo...) "I definitely owe him. I definitely owe him. The thing is, I don't care if he was trying to go down or if he got caught, I got in there, so I appreciate him."

(On what he can say about the rookie class...) "So impressive. Mature beyond their years. Big game for the whole class, with Renardo coming up big, Malik, I.G. Puni's been in there all year. Very talented, very mature class, young guys that we can count on."

(On if in the third quarter it felt as though the team was reverting to poor play...) "Yeah, that's what we've been going with this year, and the message on our sideline was, 'All right, we're faced with this again. Let's go take it. Let's not hope that we did enough already, that we built a big enough lead and hopefully things work out and we get the win.' No, let's go cement this win, going in to score and put it on our shoulders. That's exactly what we did, and I'm happy it ended that way. That was definitely a point of emphasis."

TE George Kittle

(On if this was a grimy win) "We made it grimy. Well, technically, they made it grimy. What a response. We score a touchdown, go up 23-3, and then they go right down with the kickoff return for a touchdown. We don't do anything on offense. They go down and score a 90 to 95-yard drive. All that does is reiterate that winning in the NFL is really difficult. It doesn't matter who you play. Anybody can win on any given Sunday. It's a great movie, but I was just proud of our offense, too. Our defense held them for an incredibly long time, got them through the two-minute warning, and had to score on fourth down, so they burned a ton of time off the clock, and then I was just pumped that coach (Kyle) Shanahan had committed to our outside run. It wasn't pretty the entire day, but when they finally gave us a look that we'd been practicing the entire week, we executed, and Isaac (Guerendo) went 71 yards. And then he slid, just so Kyle (Juszczyk) could get a touchdown. Kyle's in everybody's ear about that stuff. It's hilarious."

(On what about this team allows them to win in a must-win scenario) "Coach (Kyle) Shanahan has been here for eight years. We've had a lot of guys who've been here four years plus. We've been in a lot of big games, and we've won a lot of big games. We've lost some big games, so it's just that we are experienced in those moments. We try our best not to let it get too big for us. When we have new guys in the huddle, whether it's new guys to the team from (Eric) Saubert to Isaac (Guerendo), Chris Conley is playing a lot this year. When you have new guys out there, and they feel the confidence from all the guys who've been through it before, they feel like they fit right into it, and they have that confidence as well. So it's just that our team's been in those situations, and we've done pretty well with those, especially here on the road in Seattle with an amazing fan base who just despises us, which I absolutely love. It's actually fun. The guy on the corner with all the crazy signs, I gave him my hat after the game. I don't think he liked it, but I enjoyed that one. I think we have a lot of experience going through these types of games."

DB Deommodore Lenoir

(On DK Metcalf only having three catches on 11 targets and the collective effort to stop him) "Just reading our keys. It started last week. We still have that bad taste in our mouth. There's nothing better than to come out here on a Thursday night and get a W and be successful and play well as a secondary. We have (Malik) Mustapha, Renardo Green, they got their first interceptions. I'm proud of them. The one that sealed the game, Renardo, that was a hell of a play. He slipped the hip and made a play. He didn't look like a rookie right there. I tip my hat off to him."

(On what he can say about the rookie class) "What I can say about the whole DB room, we have no weak links in there. Everybody can play. When someone goes down, it's just next man up."

(On how important it was to play on a short week to flush the last game) "When you have that bad taste, you always want to come back and redeem yourself. And come out with a (win)."

LB Fred Warner

(On the performance of the rookies who played tonight) "I can't say enough about it. So big. We talked about, during the week, it being a must win and all those type of things and the gravity of the game. To have your young guys, rookies, coming in and making those type of plays to help win the game, (that's) so big and really happy for them, happy for our team, finding a way to win. It was great seeing them do that."

(On what it's like saying its a must win game in the locker room) "I think we knew the gravity of the situation. We couldn't drop all three in the division to start the year. My message to the guys on the field during warm ups was just stay focused on the process, be in the moment. All this talk about must win, all this other stuff is great, but how are we going to execute? How are we going to come out? What type of energy and tenacity are we going to play with? I think everybody showed up the right way."

(On how Renardo Green's interception went from his point of view) "I'm just back in coverage, and it looked like we got a hitch from Geno (Smith). I thought Geno must have seen something that he liked, and I turned around to see Renardo (Green) pick that ball off. In my mind, it was let's go score and try and get a block for him. Malik (Mustapha) got his interception and he ran right out of bounds. I'm like 'What are we doing? You got to learn 'Hey, come on, let's go. We got to go.'"

(On his assessment of how the 49ers secondary performed guarding DK Metcalf) "I can't say enough about it. That was a big thing for us pregame. We lose, obviously, one of our best corners before the game starts, and guys are getting shuffled around. He's a big part of what they do. I don't know what was going on with their (the Seahawks) offense. It didn't seem like he was kind of rotating in and out. But, yeah, we made his life hard for most of the game. I know he got some on us, but we got more. I'm so proud of our back end and the way that they competed."

CB Renardo Green

(On how he felt about the current rookie class) "I've played against Issac (Guerendo) and Malik (Mustapha) in college, so I knew what they were about. In camp, OTA's, we just honed in on tryouts and worked. We got a chance to see what everybody was made of and kept progressing, taking steps to get better and better every day. It's no shock to me that guys do this, we practice the way we play. We're big on that."

OL Dominick Puni

(On what it was like moving to the right guard position) "The set is different. The biggest thing is hand placement. I played the left side in college, and I was always shooting my inside hand, now I'm shooting my outside hand inside."

(On what it felt like being handed the playbook as a right guard) "As soon as I got all of the meetings and OTA's going, I knew it was going to take a lot to get used to. You can't just look at it and know it, it takes so many reps, thousands of reps."

(On his best block so far in the NFL) "Probably the 70-yard run at the end, we just had a good double, me and Colton (McKivitz)."

(On how big it was for Brock Purdy to come in and play how he did against Head Coach Mike Macdonald) "It's huge. He's so prepared every week it's insane. He knows what we're doing up front, he knows everything. For him to do that in this environment, a lot of teams will come in here and get flustered, but he's just so composed every time. He's a great leader to look up to."

T Trent Williams

(On if he felt that things weren't going well early in the season) "No. It's still early. It's only Week 6. We can still right this (stuff) without having to string off nine straight wins. Today was important. It was every bit of a must win without technically being a must win."

(On Isaac Guerendo's performance) "We've all been waiting to see IG (Isaac Guerendo) kind of turn it loose. We know he's a blazer. Reminds us a lot of Raheem Mostert. Bobby T (Robert Turner Jr.) said he's an eyelash slower, but I don't know, the kid can run. He said he was going down on purpose, so we'll give him that.

(On what he saw from the offensive line as a whole) "I think we're gelling pretty good. We're pretty much the same group outside of (Dominick) Puni, but Puni plays like he's been here a few years. So, we got lucky with that. But, we're gelling. As long as we can keep Brock (Purdy) upright, he's going carve the defense up. As long as we can get the running backs to the line of scrimmage clean, they're going to fall forward. They're going to get yards. We're not where we want to be, but we are on a good track."

Must-see shots of the Seahawks at their Week 6 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers at Lumen Field on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
