PFF Recognizes Tariq Woolen's Standout Rookie Season
The 2022 season may be in the rearview mirror, but cornerback Tariq Woolen is steadily climbing up the rankings for his play as a rookie. In Pro Football Focus’ latest rankings, Braxton Howard breaks down why Woolen ranked as the No.7 corner in passer rating allowed for 2022 league-wide.
It didn't take long for 2022 fifth-round selection Tariq Woolen to make a name with his play in Seattle, nabbing six interceptions to tie for the league-lead. But the interceptions don't tell the full story - neither do Woolen's 16 pass deflections (T-4th). In Pro Football Focus' newest cornerback Top-10 rankings, the advanced stats team calculated the lowest passer rating allowed for more than 90 of the league's participating cornerbacks who played 300 snaps or better. Woolen comes in at No.7, as one of three rookie cornerbacks to make the list (Ahmad Gardner, Alontae Taylor) with a 72.1 passer rating allowed. Howard breaks down Woolen's position, as well as making a declaration about the potential of being paired with rookie Devon Witherspoon.
NFL passer rating allowed: 72.1
Woolen comes in as the second rookie on this list, and he had an extremely impressive debut season in Seattle. He is an unbelievable athlete who was thought to need a lot of work to become a starting NFL cornerback, but he quickly debunked that theory.
Woolen's six interceptions led the league last season, and his 13 forced incompletions tied for 10th. On average, he played about 15.3 snaps per reception allowed, which is an elite figure that ranked in the top five among the qualified cornerbacks. Woolen gets to pair up with rookieDevon Witherspoon, the Seahawks' fifth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, forming one of the best young cornerback duos in the league.
As Seattle rejoices at a positive knee surgery and recovery process for Woolen, the league awaits to see what Year 2 brings from the University of Texas-San Antonio alum.
