Good morning, 12s. Here's a look at what's happening today – Monday, Aug. 23 – for your Seattle Seahawks.
Preseason Week 2: DeeJay Dallas In The Spotlight
The Seahawks' second preseason game had a disappointing result on the scoreboard, but there were still plenty of positives to take from the exhibition.
Looking at the bright side, it's impossible to ignore second-year running back DeeJay Dallas. With starters and plenty of key reserves inactive for the game against the Broncos, Dallas stepped up in a huge way. He was impressive in the passing game and had a pair of strong kickoff returns in Week 2 after scoring the Seahawks' only touchdown in Week 1.
Dallas is hoping to use the preseason as a launching point for Year 2. His rookie season was quiet as he was buried on the depth chart behind Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde. The 2020 fourth-round pick ended up with three touchdowns in limited action across 12 games as a rookie.
Here's what the media are saying after Dallas' performance:
"Last week in Las Vegas, DeeJay Dallas provided the offensive highlight of the game for Seattle, taking a short Alex McGough pass on fourth down and turning it into a 43-yard touchdown. This time around, Dallas showed his playmaking ability on special teams. Dallas not only did his best to show he deserves the kick returner role with returns of 45 and 31 yards, he also got his hand on a punt for a partial block.
"Dallas, who also had three catches for 27 yards, was a key contributor on special teams last year, and he's showing he should again have a big role this year in that phase while also being a candidate to be the third-down back on offense."
"Travis Homer, D.J. Reed and 2020 rookie Freddie Swain took turns as the team's primary kickoff returners last season. But Dallas made two returns against Denver that have Carroll thinking about a possible change.
"… The former University of Miami wide receiver also continued making a strong push to unseat injured Travis Homer as the Seahawks' third-down back. He had three more receptions, for 27 yards. That included a catch and run for 16 yards on a swing pass from Sean Mannion. It got Seattle into position for its only points in a 30-3 loss to Denver."
"One of the most impactful Seahawks on Saturday was a special teams standout. That would be running back and returner DeeJay Dallas, Seattle's 2020 fourth-round pick."
"… With Carson, Rashaad Penny and Alex Collins ahead of him on the depth chart at running back, special teams will need to be where Dallas makes his mark. In that sense, Saturday was a great day for the second-year back, who also had three catches for 27 yards."
"Second-year running back DeeJay Dallas, who scored Seattle's only TD last week, is emerging as the star of the preseason. Dallas returned two kickoffs for 73 yards, with a long of 45, in making a significant bid for that job, and he had three receptions for 27 yards. Dallas also had a partial block of a punt in the third quarter."
