Good afternoon, 12s.
Here's a look at what's 'out there' for today – Wednesday, April 22 – about your Seattle Seahawks:
QB1 On The Herd
With the 2020 NFL Draft just around the corner, Russell Wilson joined Colin Cowherd Tuesday on The Herd to talk through a wide range of topics – among them was his own draft day back in 2012.
At the 11:20 mark of the interview, Cowherd asked Wilson "What's going through your head before you're picked?"
Considering his long list of accomplishments, Wilson's draft day story may come as a surprise for many. At the start of the third round, Wilson was posted in his uncle's basement in Washington D.C., waiting for the right call.
"I did everything I could in college and now it was time to set a new tone in the NFL," Wilson said.
The phone on the wall was ringing often, except it was for a different Mr. Wilson – his uncle, a lawyer. With one bar of service on his cell phone, Wilson got a call from a 206 area code. It was the Seahawks, making him the 75th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
"In life, sometimes you just want a chance to do something great," Wilson said. "Coach Carroll, John Schneider, Paul Allen – I just wanted a chance and they gave me the chance. I was going to do everything I could to come in and be ready to play."
Wilson then turned his focus to the present, citing his excitement for the 2020 season and being surrounded by great playmakers in Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, and now Greg Olsen to name a few. Even after eight seasons, Wilson shares a sense of just beginning.
"I feel like I'm just getting started," he said. "That's the greatest feeling, when you feel like you're just getting started."
Other topics from the interview included the Seahawks battling through injuries in 2019 (0:30), how Wilson and the team are staying in shape during quarantine (1:40), time with family (3:19) and the recent release of 'The Last Dance' documentary covering Michael Jordan's 1997-1998 championship Bulls team (8:53).
Cowherd pointed to Jordan's intense leadership style and asked for Wilson's take on the Hall of Famer's greatness.
"What makes a great player a great leader, father or mother is that they're consistent every day. You know what you're going to get," Wilson said. "I think that's what Michael brought is that he was consistent in his approach."
At the 5:30 mark, Cowherd reflected on first meeting Wilson when the quarterback was 23, later telling his producer "I'm not sure I've ever met a 23-year-old human that I'm more impressed with."
Cowherd built off that story saying he's witnessed some of the greatest athletes like Jordan have strong influences to get them where they are today – what about Wilson? For QB1, it started with his parents' belief.
"What my parents taught me is they gave me an imagination," Wilson said. "They really let me believe and write out my visions and talk to me and set goals and have a plan. I think a lot of times we don't have a strategy; we don't have a plan. You got to have that love for the process and then enjoy the fruits of your labor later."
