Die Seahawks (4-5) reisen an diesem Wochenende in die Bay Area, um im Levi's Stadium gegen die 49ers (5-4) anzutreten. Für Seattle ist es das erste Spiel nach der Bye Week. Mental und körperlich erholt, hoffen die Seahawks, die zusätzliche Zeit genutzt zu haben, um einige der Fehler auszubügeln, die in jüngerer Vergangenheit zu Niederlagen geführt haben. Nun liegt der Fokus wieder auf dem engen Rennen in der NFC West.
"Wir gehen weiter voran", sagte Seahawks-Coach Mike Macdonald. "Die Jungs sind gut drauf, wir haben eine große Vorbereitungswoche hinter uns."
Hier sind fünf Dinge, auf die man achten sollte, wenn die Seahawks am Wochenende in Santa Clara auf die 49ers treffen:
1. Baut die Defensive auf den Fortschritten aus dem letzten Spiel auf und verhindert gegnerische Big Plays?
Obwohl das letzte Spiel der Seahawks, die Niederlage am 9. Spieltag gegen die Rams, nicht so endete, wie sie es sich erhofft hatten, war die Leistung der Defense von Seattle ein ermutigendes Zeichen.
Bei dieser 20:26-Niederlage nach Overtime zwangen die Seahawks die Rams zu sieben Three-and-Outs, so viele wie kein anderer Gegner in dieser Saison. Zudem hielten sie die Rams auf nur 68 Rushing Yards und einem Durchschnitt von 2,8 Yards pro Lauf – eine erhebliche Verbesserung für eine Defense, die in den vier vorangegangenen Spielen jeweils mindestens 155 Rushing Yards bei durchschnittlich 4,8 Yards pro Lauf zugelassen hatte.
"Ich denke, wir haben etwas aggressiver gespielt, das hat uns geholfen", sagte der erfahrene Defensive Tackle Jarran Reed. "Wenn man sich in ein neues Defensiv-System integriert, muss man sich erst zurechtfinden."
Eine weitere Verbesserung der Defense zeigte sich darin, dass sie weniger Big Plays zuließen – etwas, das in früheren Spielen, auch bei der Niederlage gegen die 49ers in Woche 6, ein Problem war. Die Rams hatten zwar einige größere Spielzüge, darunter ein 39-Yard-Touchdown, aber das war der längste, den Seattle zugelassen hatte, und der einzige über 30 Yards. Gegen die 49ers in Woche 6 resultierte ein beträchtlicher Teil von San Franciscos Saisonbestleistung von 483 Yards aus wenigen, aber entscheidenden Spielzügen, darunter ein 76-Yard-Touchdown von Deebo Samuel und ein 76-Yard-Lauf von Isaac Guerendo spät im vierten Viertel.
Die Offensive der 49ers ist talentiert, und das System von Kyle Shanahan ist schwer zu stoppen, aber der Schlüssel für die Seahawks wird es sein, Spielzüge nicht in Big Plays münden zu lassen.
2. Wie wird das neue Inside-Linebacker-Duo performen?
Die Seahawks werden mit einem neuen Inside-Linebacker-Duo auflaufen, nachdem sie Ernest Jones IV vor drei Wochen durch einen Trade geholt und nach der Bye Week Tyrel Dodson freigestellt hatten. Rookie Tyrice Knight wird voraussichtlich die Starterrolle übernehmen (Coach Macdonald erwähnte, dass auch Drake Thomas Einsatzzeit bekommen könnte).
Jones hat in seinen ersten beiden Spielen für die Seahawks bereits beeindruckende Leistungen gezeigt. Jetzt wird er mit einem neuen Partner an seiner Seite spielen und zusätzlich die Rolle des Play-Callers auf dem Feld übernehmen, die vorher Dodson innehatte.
"Ich denke, der Unterschied ist die Erfahrung", sagte Jones über den Unterschied zwischen Dodson und dem unerfahrenen Knight. "Er hat nicht so viele Spiele auf dem Buckel, aber er arbeitet hart. Seit ich hier bin, sieht man, dass er ein guter Spieler ist, der seine Hände gut einsetzt und die Ballträger gut liest. Ich bin zuversichtlich, dass er am Sonntag seinen Job machen wird."
3. Welches Team gewinnt die frühen Versuche?
Third-Down-Conversions sind ein entscheidender Faktor im Football und bisher sind die 49ers eines der besten Teams der Liga in dieser Disziplin: Sie konvertieren 43,3 Prozent ihrer dritten Versuche, was sie auf Platz 6 in der NFL bringt, während die Seahawks auf Rang 24 mit 35,2 Prozent stehen. Aber genauso wichtig wie die Third-Down-Zahlen ist, was davor passiert. Ein Grund, warum die Seahawks bei dritten Versuchen oft in schlechte Situationen geraten, ist, dass sie bei den Versuchen zuvor Schwierigkeiten haben.
Die 49ers hingegen dominieren bei ersten Versuchen, mit einem Durchschnitt von 7,05 Yards pro Spielzug, der zweitbeste Wert der Liga.
"Dieses Spiel wird in großen Teilen davon abhängen, wie gut beide Teams bei ersten Versuchen agieren", sagte Macdonald. "Wir haben in einigen Aspekten im ersten Spiel gut gespielt, aber wir haben auch Big Plays zugelassen. Es geht darum, diese zu eliminieren und uns in eine bessere Ausgangsposition zu bringen."
4. Kann Geno Smith mit der Offense sauberen Football spielen?
Wenn die Seahawks auf der Offensiv-Seite keine Fehler machen, sahen sie in dieser Saison oft stark aus. Doch wenn Strafen, Sacks und Turnovers aufkommen, wie in den letzten Spielen, dann stockt die Offensive. Das war auch im ersten Aufeinandertreffen mit den 49ers der Fall, als ein vielversprechender Drive in einer Interception endete, und andere Drives nach Strafen gestoppt wurden. Bei Seattles fünf Saison-Niederlagen gab es insgesamt 11 Turnover, zudem kassierten sie in vier dieser Spiele mindestens 9 Strafen.
"Ich denke, wir können jedes Team schlagen", sagte Quarterback Geno Smith. "Wir haben das Potenzial, aber wir müssen schlauer spielen und aufhören, uns selbst ins Bein zu schießen."
5. Was bedeutet die Rückkehr der Pro-Bowl-Spieler für beide Offensiven?
Beim letzten Aufeinandertreffen fehlte den 49ers Christian McCaffrey, der seit letzter Woche nach seiner Achillessehnenverletzung wieder auf dem Feld steht. McCaffrey ist einer der wenigen Nicht-Quarterbacks, die eine Offensive extrem stark beeinflussen können – er hat in allen vier Spielen gegen die Seahawks jeweils über 100 Rushing Yards erzielt und insgesamt vier Touchdowns erzielt.
"Er ist wirklich ein Alleskönner", sagte Jones. "Man kann ihn überall aufstellen – als Receiver, wo er genauso Plays machen kann, oder als Running Back, und wenn er eine Lücke sieht, bestraft er dich sofort. Diese Woche haben wir eine große Aufgabe vor uns mit ihrem Team und allem, was sie mitbringen. Aber ich weiß, was wir haben, und das macht mich richtig gespannt."
Aufseiten der Seahawks hofft man, DK Metcalf nach zwei Spielen Pause wegen einer Knieverletzung zurückzubekommen. Metcalf ist mit 568 Yards und drei Touchdowns in sieben Spielen einer der Schlüsselspieler der Seahawks-Offensive. Alleine durch seine Präsenz kann er eine Defense beeinflussen.
"Wenn DK auf dem Feld ist, macht er die Defensive nervös und schafft Freiräume für die anderen", sagte Geno Smith. "Er ist ein enormer Gewinn für die Offense. Wenn er auf dem Feld steht, muss die Defense immer im Auge behalten, wo er ist, was den anderen Jungs mehr Freiräume und günstigere Matchups verschafft. Er ist immer eine Gefahr und wir können uns auf ihn verlassen."
