Nach zwei Auswärtsspielen beenden die Seahawks die Preseason am Samstagabend im heimischen Lumen Field mit einem Spiel gegen die Cleveland Browns. Welche Faktoren dabei im Fokus stehen und welche Rolle dabei die Stammspieler spielen werden, erfährst du hier!
"Der Plan ist, dass man viele Stammspieler zu Beginn des Spiels sehen wird", sagte Mike Macdonald auf der Pressekonferenz vor der Partie gegen die Browns. "Wie viele Snaps die Starter spielen, hängt von der jeweiligen Person ab. Aber der Plan ist, einige der Jungs spielen zu lassen. Ein paar Spieler haben Blessuren, weshalb nicht jeder gegen die Browns auf dem Feld stehen wird. Aber im Großen und Ganzen werden die meisten Stammspieler das Spiel beginnen, Geno (Smith) eingeschlossen."
Mehr dazu und zu anderen Dingen, die zu beobachten sind, wenn die Seahawks die Browns im Lumen Field empfangen:
1. Wie nutzen die Starter den letzten Vorbereitungstest?
Seattles Starter in der Defense haben in dieser Preseason bereits Teile der ersten beiden Spiele absolviert. Im Gegensatz dazu hat das vermeintliche Offense-Stammpersonal um Quarterback Geno Smith bislang noch gar nicht auf dem Feld gestanden. Wie Coach Macdonald mitteilte, wird sich das am Samstag ändern, sodass die fitten Starter ihre Einsatzzeiten bekommen werden. Dabei ist es jedoch möglich, dass die Spieler aus der ersten Reihe nur dosiert eingesetzt werden.
Die Blicke dürften sich dabei in der Offensive auf die Spielweise des neuen Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb in Verbindung mit Quarterback Smith richten, obwohl davon ausgegangen werden kann, dass die Spielzüge (noch) simpel gehalten werden. Für die Defensive ist es hingegen eine weitere Möglichkeit, ihre kontinuierliche Entwicklung weiter voranzutreiben, die Head Coach Macdonald zuletzt lobend hervorhob.
"In der Offensive hatten wir einfach noch keine Gelegenheit, alle Spieler auf das Feld zu schicken, vor allem nicht in unserem Stadion", sagte Macdonald. "Wir haben all diese Spielzüge durchgesprochen, und es hat schon etwas, wenn man die Pads anzieht und tatsächlich rausgeht und den Ball bewegt. Defensiv haben wir im ersten Spiel nur sechs Spielzüge absolviert, das ist also eine gute Gelegenheit, noch mehr gutes Videomaterial zu sammeln und mit etwas Selbstvertrauen in das erste reguläre Saisonspiel zu gehen."
2. Anthony Bradford oder Christian Haynes – wer setzt sich im Wettbewerb um den rechten Guard durch?
Die meisten Startplätze sind bereits besetzt, aber einer, der "schnell geklärt werden muss", wie Macdonald es ausdrückte, ist die Position des rechten Guard. Es wird sich zwischen Anthony Bradford, der vergangenes Jahr als Rookie zehn Spiele bestritt, und Christian Haynes, einem Drittrundenpick aus dem diesjährigen Draft, entscheiden.
Bradford hat die meiste Zeit des Camps mit der ersten Mannschaft trainiert, aber seit vergangener Woche wird Haynes mehr und mehr in die Starting-Offensive integriert. Haynes hat ebenfalls Spielanteile als Left Guard bekommen, als der eigentliche Starter Laken Tomlinson ein paar Ruhetage bekam. Im vergangenen Spiel hat Haynes viel auf der Position des linken Guard gespielt, als der Großteil der Startformation nicht auf dem Feld war.
Trotz des Konkurrenzkampfes zwischen den beiden bleibt der Umgang der beiden Offensiv Liner normal, wie Bradford sagte: "Die Leute von außen denken vielleicht, dass ich Christian nicht mag, aber das stimmt nicht. Es ist ein Job, jeder versucht, seine Familie zu ernähren. Ich bin nicht nachtragend, es ist nicht so, dass er mir etwas angetan hat oder ich ihm etwas angetan habe. Wir sind cool."
Dabei lobte Bradford seinen Konkurrenten sogar und zeigte dadurch, dass über dem Konkurrenzkampf vor allem die Gemeinschaft und der Erfolg als Team steht: "Er ist ein guter Spieler. Als Rookie ist er ruhig, er nimmt die Kritik der Älteren gerne an und ist einfach nur gelehrig. Er ist ein guter Spieler, ich mag ihn sehr."
3. Kann jemand seine Hoffnungen auf einen Kaderplatz durch die Special Team fördern oder gar zerstören?
Wenn es darum geht, es in den 53-Mann-Kader zu schaffen, werden einige der begehrten Plätze nicht aufgrund der Leistungen eines Spielers in der Offensive oder Defensive vergeben, sondern aufgrund seiner Leistungen in den Special Teams. Wenn man zum Beispiel der fünft- oder sechstbeste Receiver eines Teams ist, bekommt man möglicherweise keinen Platz auf der Liste, wenn der siebtbeste Receiver auch ein hervorragender Spieler für die Special Teams ist, der Kicks und Punts abdeckt, bei Returns blockt oder sogar selbst als Returner eingesetzt werden kann.
Wenn es also darum geht, die letzten Entscheidungen um einen Kaderplatz zu treffen, könnte der entscheidende Faktor wohl die Leistungen in den Special Teams sein und nicht in der Offensive oder Defensive. Vor allem weil Kickoffs und Punts in der Praxis schwieriger zu reproduzieren sind und nur in diesen drei Preseason-Spielen vollständig bewertet werden können. Diese Tatsache kann bei den Spielern zu einem gewissen Zwiespalt führen. Auf der einen Seite ist dieses letzte Spiel eine große Chance. Aber auf der anderen Seite kann ein Spieler, der noch nicht genügend gute Leistungen gezeigt hat und sich auf ein großes letztes Testspiel verlässt, um seine Chancen zu verbessern, überfordert sein und Fehler machen.
"Ich denke, dass beides zutrifft", so Special Teams Coordinator Jay Harbaugh. "Jede Gelegenheit ist wichtig. Das letzte Spiel ist wichtig, das erste Spiel ist wichtig und jedes Training ist auch wichtig. Die Spiele sind wahrscheinlich wichtiger, aber zu diesem Zeitpunkt hat man ein ziemlich gutes Gefühl dafür, wie die Spieler spielen werden. Es handelt sich dabei um einen intensiven Konkurrenzkampf. Die Jungs, die das auf die leichte Schulter nehmen, werden Schwierigkeiten bekommen."
Auch Macdonald ist gespannt, wie sich die Special Teams entwickeln, wenn die Spieler um einen Platz im Kader kämpfen.
"Für euch ist es vielleicht nicht so aufregend, aber für uns als Trainer ist es eine Gelegenheit, da rauszugehen und sich einen Job in dieser Liga zu verdienen, sei es bei uns oder einem anderen Team", sagte Macdonald. "Wir werden in den nächsten Tagen mit den Jungs darüber sprechen, aber es gibt so viele Beispiele dafür, wie man sich in diesem dritten Preseason-Spiel einen Platz verdienen kann. Jeder hat seinen eigenen Zeitplan, um sich eine Chance zu verdienen, was ein großer Segen ist. Es ist nicht einfach, diese Gelegenheit zu bekommen, seine Träume wahr werden zu lassen, also wird es eine lustige Nacht werden."
4. Sind die endgültigen Wide-Receiver-Kaderplätze bereits vergeben, und wenn nicht, wer kann die letzte Chance nutzen?
Die Seahawks mögen eine Reihe von Positionen mit ausreichender Kaderbreite haben, aber eine der best besetzten Position ist sicherlich die der Wide Receiver. Die Seahawks verfügen nicht nur über ein Elite-Trio um DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett und Jaxon Smith-Njigba, sondern auch über eine Menge Talent und Tiefe hinter diesen drei. Jake Bobo, dem letztes Jahr um diese Zeit als nicht gedrafteter Rookie der Durchbruch gelang, scheint einen Platz im Team sicher zu haben, aber danach gibt es eine Menge guter Spieler, die um einen oder zwei Plätze im 53-Mann-Kader kämpfen. Eine Gruppe, die aus Laviska Shenault Jr., der in der Vorsaison auch der beste Kick Returner war, Dareke Young und Easop Winston Jr. besteht. Winston, der letzten Saison Teil des Practise Squads war, war wohl der produktivste Spieler im Camp und in der Preseason.
Wie bereits erwähnt, kommt es bei der Vergabe der letzten Plätze auf jeder Position vor allem auf die Einsatzmöglichkeit bei den Special Teams an und auch wenn dies eher für Shenault und Young spricht, so hat Winston doch schon einige Einsätze bei den Return- und Coverage-Teams absolviert und könnte in Kombination mit seinem herausragenden Spiel im Camp und in der Preseason der Vorsaison noch im Rennen um einen Platz im Team sein. D'Wayne Eskridge wird unterdessen versuchen, einen guten Eindruck zu hinterlassen, nachdem er das Spiel der letzten Woche wegen einer Verletzung verpasst hat.
5. Wie sieht es mit der Tiefe der Linebacker aus, die gerade erst mit Rookie Michael Barrett verstärkt wurden?
Da Jerome Baker mit einer Oberschenkelverletzung ausfällt und Jon Rhattigan in den letzten Wochen ebenfalls fehlte, wurde die Breite der Inside Linebacker der Seahawks im Camp auf die Probe gestellt. Die Seahawks haben das Problem am Donnerstag gelöst, indem sie den Rookie Michael Barrett, einen Siebtrunden-Pick aus Michigan, in einem Trade mit den Panthers erhalten haben. Macdonald sagte am Donnerstag, er wisse noch nicht, ob Barrett am Samstag spielen wird. Unabhängig davon sei die Partie gegen die Browns die letzte Chance für Rookie Tyrice Knight, Ratthigan und Patrick O'Connell, um zu zeigen, wer die Backup-Position hintern den mutmaßlichen Startern Tyrel Dodson und Baker innehaben wird.
