Good morning, 12s. Here's a look at what's out there today — Thursday, December 14 — about your Seattle Seahawks.
Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner named a finalist for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.
Seahawks linebacker and captain Bobby Wagner continues to produce on the field in his 12th season, recording 100-plus tackles for the 12th straight year. He's also being recognized for more than his playmaking this year. In addition to being the team's Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee, Wagner has also been named a finalist for the 2023 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.
The Utah State alum has used his strong community values to become an esteemed philanthropist in the Pacific Northwest since Seattle selected him in the second round of the 2012 draft. Wagner spent 10 seasons with Seattle, before joining the Los Angeles Rams in 2022 via free agency. A season later, Wagner is back in Seattle, falling back in step on the field and in the community. Since rejoining the franchise, Wagner has worked in-partnership with Microsoft and Seattle Public Schools’ African American Male Achievement program to provide resources to young high school men from the area. In July, Wagner partnered with Virginia Mason Franciscan Health to create the Phenia Mae Fund to honor his late mother (Phenia) while promoting stroke awareness and education.
In November, Seahawks defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt spoke on why Wagner embodies the core values that the Rooney Award looks for, such as respect, integrity and resiliency.
"Everything he does," said Hurtt. "He treats people around with high regard, showing respect to individuals, to teammates, to other players on other teams. Everything about him is about respect, how he treats other people. So if he wins this award, there's nobody better you could select. He has always carried himself with such high class and grace. Even when he was not here, he still was super classy and respectful the whole way through."
The 33-year-old Los Angeles, California native has a team-leading 132 tackles, 2.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and a recovery through 13 games played. He now looks to help the 6-7 Seahawks get back on track and back to the playoffs over the final four games of the regular season.
